This Stranger Things behind the scenes is running up that hill with Max as she barely escapes Vecna’s clutches.

The biggest turning point in the first half of this season is the scene where Max is trying to escape Vecna (aka Henry). The scene has two parts that take place in two realities. Above, Max begins to rise above the earth and her friends try to figure out what to do. How to pull her back to them. Below Vecna is pulling her in to consume her energy and pain. He wants to keep her in his mind lair, in a twisted version of the house he grew up in.

With the help of Steve, Dustin, Lucas, and Kate Bush she’s able to escape. Barely.

Max has gone from a side character to front and center this season. She’s been the outsider most of her life, and meeting her friends in Hawkins has been life changing. And not just because of the monsters. In a recent interview with HR, actor Sadie Sink talked about Max’s motivations in this scene.

“To be in a position where her life is on the line, but to see her friends showing up for her and choosing to fight was a really powerful moment for her. The heart of the season and the entire show is based upon the idea that friendship is stronger than fear. That really comes to play in that moment for Max.”

Stranger Things Behind the Scenes

In this behind the scenes look at that daring escape director Shawn Levy talks about the production. The scene took a bunch of talent to pull off. The recreation of Henry’s house/mind lair in the Upside Down was done with as many practical effects as possible and layered with CG. Sadie Sink (Max) did an amazing job pulling it all together with her performance.

She was able to work with Jamie Campbell Bower in costume, who she describes as being terrifying. His transformation from Jamie to Vecna takes hours… enough time for a couple of calls and a giant Starbuck’s beverage.

They don’t have a lot of time left. The second part of this season includes two movie-length episodes. The fifth season will be the show’s last and will likely contain a time jump due to scheduling and due to its actors aging out of this ‘kids with bikes’ tale. I’m glad there’s a planned end, hopefully won’t get GoT‘ed again.
