‘The Boys’ Season 3 Kicks Off With an Explosion – It’s Pretty Gross
The first three episodes of the The Boys season 3 are out – and the show has never been better.
There’s no way to prepare for some of the things that happen in the first three episodes. You just have to go with it. Maybe yell “WTF?!” at your TV a few times. Showrunner Eric Kripke promised more blood, more violence, and more depravity – season three delivers. As he told Variety:
“There’s something that, conservatively speaking, is a thousand times crazier than the whale. And that’s just science. It’s in the first 15 minutes of the first episode, so we open with a real bang.”
That’s one way to put it. There’s a lot of splatter and people exploding into chunky clouds of organic matter. Be it from Homelander‘s homicidal depression or Butcher’s homicidal rage, no one is safe this season.
From the start, there was an expectation for the show to be crass and outrageous due to the source material. They’ve managed to make a brilliant, psychological satire that’s both shocking and outrageous. From season one, the writers have been spot on in their needling at current culture. That has not changed with this season – in fact, it’s honed even more. They skewer everything from cable news and reality TV to theme parks and the Snyder Cut.
The Boys Season 3 – The Seven
In the first several episodes Vought International and Homelander are on a PR campaign to fix the Stormfront issue. The broken supe goes on TV and reads the same lines over and over, losing his mind a bit more every time. While he tries to repair his public image, Vought CEO is constantly reminding him he’s not in control. Homelander is not ok. Antony Starr’s performance as a truly unhinged Homlander is brilliant. I can’t wait to see where he takes it in the next several weeks.
The rest of The Seven are trying to find a way to survive around an unravelling supe that has the power to kill them all. The Deep is having a comeback with a book and A-Train is trying to rebrand himself. Starlight is moving up in the ranks and Maeve continues her mission to take it all down.
The Boys Season 3 – The Boys
The Boys have been trying to get back at Vought via less violent channels – and are failing. Hughie has joined the Federal Bureau of Superhuman Affairs, and has Butcher (Karl Urban continues to be at his most aggressive), Frenchie, and Kimiko hunting down unlawful supes for him. On the side, the trio is looking into Payback and Soldier Boy in hopes of finding a way to kill Homelander and the other members of The Seven.
This season is non-stop and sees the characters putting their internal morals aside. M.M. decides that he’s not a family man after trying his best to be the father he wants to be. Starlight is once again Hughie’s informant.
Butcher hasn’t exactly given up on his old ways, but he follows orders until Hughie let’s him off his leash. The comics had everyone on this side of the fight on V to even the odds, and we are getting there in the show with Butcher kicking it off. Now he has a short fuse and access to laser eyes.
Episode three takes us back on the timeline to the creation of Payback and our first look at Soldier Boy. There’s more to explore here. I will say it’s weird watching Jensen Ackles be an asshole after a decade of Supernatural, but he’s great in this role so far (on both timelines).
By the end of the third episode The Boys are back together, cracking jokes and skulls. The Seven and Vought has new problems – namely trying to control their star spangled team member. So far what’s clear is that Butcher and Homelander will stop at nothing to reach their goals – and they don’t care who they take out on the way. An all out war is on the way.
I can’t wait till next week’s episode, which drops next Friday.
