Warhammer 40K: The Kratos Heavy Assault Tank Has Rules
Well that didn’t take long. The Kratos Heavy Assault Tank now has rules for use in Warhammer 40,000.
Over the weekend I posed the question of whether or not the new Plastic Horus Heresy models should get rules in 40k, too. Thanks to those folks to responded in the positive or negative for that question. But now, we have an official answer from the folks at GW: The Kratos has rules for use in 40k.
“Fortunately, the finest techno-archaeologists of the Warhammer Studio have unearthed a slate of rules so that the Adeptus Astartes can deploy the Kratos onto the battlefields of the 41st Millennium. While most of these treaded beasts were destroyed during the Heresy, some yet survive, venerated by those Chapters lucky enough to still own one.”
The Kratos Now Has 40k Rules
You can download the full rules right here. Let’s take a look at what this beast can do on the tabletop of 40k.
Kicking things off, it’s tough. 18 wounds with a Toughness of 8 and a 2+ save is no joke. It’s also a Heavy Support and not a Lord of War. It’s a 320+ point Heavy Support…but yeah, still a Heavy Support option! By now you’ve seen the sheer number of guns this tank has, too. And you can see all the crazy firepower profiles this tank as above.
The Kratos has guns. Lots of guns.
One thing we do want to call out is the Martial Legacy rule. If you include this unit in a Detachment then increase that Detachment’s Command Cost by 1CP. That’s an interesting way to limit this particular tank. Funnily enough, I think the real limit is just going to be getting your hands on this model. At least to start. It’s a great kit and it looks fantastic so I’m betting it’s going to be a popular option at launch.
Rules… Too Soon?
Personally, I’m not that surprised that GW released rules for the 40k version of the Kratos. As I wrote about earlier it would be silly of them not to have a datasheet for this tank. I was just expecting it to come out in a couple of months, perhaps a couple of weeks after it’s launch. But that wasn’t GW’s plan. The model isn’t officially out yet and they’ve already dropped 40k rules for it.
To put that in perspective Horus Heresy players don’t even know what it can do in the Age of Darkness and GW already put out the 40k rules. We know more about what this model can do in 40k than the new version of The Horus Heresy. Considering this tank was introduced specifically for the Horus Heresy, this just seems kinda…odd.
Oh well. In a week or two it won’t really matter, right? At least 40k players and HH players can use this in both systems so at the end of the day it’s a win for both.
Kratos Heavy Assault Tank $125
The Kratos Heavy Assault Tank is based on an Ancient Terran pattern fielded during the Unification of Old Earth, redesigned after the Emperor’s treaty with the Lords of Mars to serve as the spearhead of the Great Crusade, a line-breaker and foe hammer. This grinding battle tank is all but impervious to enemy fire, and its steady, inexorable advance provides an indomitable core to any assault by the Legiones Astartes, enforced by a barrage of overwhelming firepower.
