Age of Sigmar: Big Winners in GHB 2022
As battle shifts to the cramped tunnels below Ghur, a different kind of warrior is required.
The new General’s Handbook has been floating around the wilds for a while now, and it’s already setting a precedent for how the meta will function going forward. While the last edition set the stage for a Monstrous takeover, the new release brings us back to the basics. Infantry of all types are going to see a massive uptick, and monsters may fade into obscurity. But who benefitted the most from the new Veteran rules or the other exciting updates?
Hordes
Probably the most obvious big winner this edition is armies that can swarm the board. With the dawn of 3.0’s limits on reinforcements, armies that relied on their numbers like Skaven and Gloomspite pretty much fell off the map. However, thanks to both the Veteran rules and the fighting coherency updates, Stormvermin and Grotz are deadly once again. The biggest winners, of course, are units like Zombies that were already potent and just got worse in the new edition. Summoning armies are going to see a lot of value in the coming weeks, and I’m hoping the new Tzeentch book sets a precedent for Chaos.
Mid-Size MSUs
A surprise winner here is going to be medium Infantry like Bullgors, Ogors, and Swolecast, who can benefit from the new Hunter rules. While they can’t get all the benefits of the Infantry spam or veterancy, they can be put into special battalions to hunt down the massive hordes that will likely show up. The added bulk will help them wipe out enemy spam and still be kicking at the end.
Monsters
With all the focus on infantry, no one is going to expect or prepare for monsters. Plan accordingly, because dragons hurt just as much with more targets to chew through.
How will your army fare in the new edition?
