‘Deadpool’ and ‘Logan’ Will be the First Rated-R Movies on Disney+
Soon you’ll be able to watch Deadpool and Logan. On the same family-friendly service as Winnie the Pooh and Doc McStuffins.
Variety has confirmed that the three very adult movies will be available on the streaming service.
In a move that will have subscribers lunging for the parental controls, Disney+ announced that “Deadpool,” “Deadpool 2” and “Logan” will be joining the streaming service. The very, very R-rated superhero flicks will make their debut on July 22, dramatically ratcheting up the amount of blood splatter and the number of f-bombs currently available on Disney+.
In celebration, Ryan Reynolds shared these honest ratings for Disney kids’ movies on Twitter. He’s not wrong. Hugh Jackman backed him up, adding “no amount of mutant healing factor could heal these emotional scars. Great movies for family night in!” Ryan Reynolds also posted the following images on his Twitter:
Moving Deadpool & Marvel Adult Programming to Disney+
In the announcement, Disney noted that “subscribers are invited to revisit their parental controls settings to ensure a viewing experience most suitable for them and their family.” Disney+ started with a promise that nothing would be over a PG rating. Anything above would be on Hulu. That got thrown out the window when the Netflix shows came over. The service added parental controls.
Disney has always had a stake in Hulu, they gained a majority stake when the Fox buyout went through. They’ve made not quite family-friendly Marvel content and put it out on Hulu before with Helstrom. There was a plan to make a Hulu-exclusive universe with Ghostrider and others from that corner of Marvel, but it didn’t make it to production after Helstrom flopped.
With that failure and the shift to collecting all things Marvel on Disney+. I don’t think we’ll be seeing any more Marvel properties on Hulu (and likely not on other services). You’re going to have to cough up a subscription fee to the mouse.
Disney will still have a presence on Hulu, but it will be with other Fox IP with no Marvel ties. There was a fear that the genre titles would be shoved in the back of a closet when the buyout happened, but they’re trying to use them. Prey is out next month and there is (maybe hopefully) an upcoming Alien series that is being produced under the FX umbrella.
The ever-shifting number of streaming services and what content goes where is a side effect of the streaming wars. Sometimes I wonder if keeping cable would have been better. At least I’d only have one bill.
