What We Know About Dune: Part Two
The movie covers the second half of the classic sci-fi novel, starting with Paul and Jessica’s trek to the Fremen sietch. The official synopsis from synopsis from Warner Bros. and Legendary:
“This follow-up film will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”
This half will bring in more interplanetary politics, Paul’s rise as a leader, and start of the Muad’Dib’s Jihad. Plus all of the new characters that come with that expansion.
The cast that made it out of Part 1 alive is returning. These are some of the actors are joining them:
- Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV
- Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan Corrino
- Austin Butler as Feyd Rautha
- Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot Fenring
- Souheila Yacoub as Shishakli
The Plot and Production Challenges
The first movie laid a lot of groundwork, but that doesn’t mean the sequel is going to be a cakewalk to produce. The story and setting are about to get much bigger. Director Denis Villeneuve is well aware of what is ahead, as he told Variety:
“The thing that helps us right now is that it’s the first time I’ve revisited a universe. So I’m working with the same crew, everybody knows what to do, we know what it will look like. The movie will be more challenging, but we know where we are stepping. And the screenplay is written. So I feel confident. Frankly, the only big unknown for me right now is the pandemic.”
The director also mentioned that we’ll be getting more of the Baron and his ilk in Dune: Part Two.
“It’s like a chess game. Some new characters will be introduced in the second part and a decision I made very early on was that this first part would be more about Paul Atreides and the Bene Gesserit, and his experience of being in contact for the first time with a different culture. Second part, there will be much more Harkonnen stuff.”
Paul’s word is about to crack wide open – and his enemies aren’t expecting his wrath.
‘Dune: Part Two’ opens on November 17, 2023.
