Epic Encounters: Ghoul-kin & Corpse Crawler Unboxed
We got the new Steamforged Games’ Epic Encounters adventures. We’re unpacking the Hive of the Ghoul-kin and Barrow of the Corpse Crawler!
The Epic Encounters from Steamforged Games are one of my favorite TTRPG products out there. Each box has either a bunch of great miniatures (warband boxes) or one massive miniature (boss boxes). They can be played as individual encounters or used as a pair for a longer adventure. Plus, they are designed to be used as a “drop-in” for your campaigns and are 100% compatible with 5E. Today we’re cracking open the Hive of the Ghoul-kin and Barrow of the Corpse Crawler!
Epic Encounters Every Time
Let’s start off with the Warband box first. This is kind of the “intro” box for these two adventures. Inside the box you’ll find 15 miniatures made from 5 unique sculpts, an adventure book, a double-sided game mat with a fantastic background to play on and grid squares, and the packaging inside makes for great storage for later.
The minis themselves are highly detailed and come unpainted — but they are dyed plastic. They would be great to use right out of the box but if you are so inclined to paint them up you could totally do that as well. Each of the 5 unique sculpts is characterful and for a different monster. This box is great if you’ve always wanted some Ghou-kin miniatures but could never get lucky with a blind-box purchase from other product lines.
The adventure book is also super handy. I know a lot of folks are mostly focused on the miniatures but if you’re a GM you’re going to appreciate these booklets. They contain all the basics for the these monsters in terms of rules with suggested stats and DCs for their abilities. SFG also went as far as to include those stats for various tiers of play, too. So this box can scale for your party’s respective level.
Furthermore, the adventure book also contains a ton of great info including numerous plot hooks and suggestions on how to run these ghouls in your games. You can follow along with the adventure book right from the start or you can use any of those hooks to add to your current campaign.
Bring On The Boss
Again, you can use these two products in conjunction as the story-line in the adventure books leads from one adventure to the next — if you so choose to follow it. And the boss fight for this one is quite epic indeed! No spoilers here, but it looks like a challenge. Your party will have to face down a gargantuan Corpse Crawler!
The boss box contains just one miniature, but it’s on a 100mm base and comes unpainted. The Corpse Crawler is a very impressive sculpt and honestly it’s perfect for pretty much any giant worm you might need in your campaigns. Also included in the box are another game-mat, adventure book and some extra tokens for ghoul-kin minions if you don’t have the warband box.
Both of these products are in stores now and available online. If you’re short on ideas for your next TTRPG session and need a little help then check out these Epic Encounters — you won’t be disappointed!
