First Look at Sauron in New ‘Rings of Power’ SDCC Trailer
The trailer shows all the races of the Second Age as the expand and build kingdoms across Middle Earth, plus our first look at Sauron.
The trailer gives a very fast history lesson. It begins with the end of first age, the war of the Sindars and the defeat of the great Valar Morgoth and (supposedly) his most trusted lieutenant. The elves live in harmony, the humans start expanding across Middle Earth and founding cities like Numenor. And the seven dwarves are crafting their underground kingdoms.
The time of peace and light is short before Sauron rises using deceit, greed, and nine rings of power. We get our first look at the greatest subversive Maia, renowned student of the Vala Aulë. Sauron.
First Look at Sauron
“Now Sauron’s lust and pride increased, until he knew no bounds, and he determined to make himself master of all things in Middle-earth, and to destroy the Elves, and to compass if he might, the downfall of Númenor. He brooked no freedom nor any rivalry, and he named himself Lord of the Earth. A mask he still could wear so that if he wished he might deceive the eyes of Men, seeming to them wise and fair.
But he ruled rather by force and fear, if they might avail; and those who perceived his shadow spreading over the world called him the Dark Lord and named him the Enemy; and he gathered under his government all the evil things of the days of Morgoth that remained on earth or beneath it, and the Orcs were at his command and multiplied like flies.“

The Rings of Power Synopsis & Cast
The ensemble cast is huge and includes Peter Tait (was in the original movie trilogy). It also includes faces you would recognize from Doctor Who and Westworld. There aren’t any huge names, but I think that will work out better for the show. Howard Shore wrote the score.
The Rings of Power is really digging in to the history of Middle Earth to present a story (they hope) fans will tune in for. It takes place over thousands of years. For that reason we’re going to be getting something a little different than what’s on the page, something that works more for television and welcomes a broader audience – not just Tolkien purists.
“This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.“
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power arrives on Amazon Prime Video on September 2.
