HBO’s House of the Dragon comes out in less than a month and there is a lot to look forward to.

House of the Dragon is a prequel show to the original Game of Thrones. Set nearly 200 years before the events of the first show, it chronicles the events of civil war among the ruling family of the Seven Kingdoms. While a major hit, Game of Thrones ended up being a very controversial show. Strong early seasons gave way to a mediocre middle and a widely derided ending. Thanks to the end the legacy of the show was tainted and many people have doubts about House of the Dragon.  The new show however has a lot to offer, so here are some reasons to be excited about House of the Dragon.

It Could Be the Best of Game Of Thrones Again

Let’s start off by remembering that Game of Thrones could be really, really good. The first few seasons are some of the best fantasy TV out there. While it’s been tainted by the ending, there is a real and exciting chance that House of the Dragon came to bring back the good old days. Especially given that it’s got new showrunners. To quote the Game of Thornes:

“Madness and greatness are two sides of the same coin. Every time a new season if filmed, the gods toss the coin in the air and the world holds its breath to see how it will land.”

A Focused Story

Game of Thrones is a huge sprawling story. It takes place over large swaths of the world and involves many nations. It has a huge cast and many different plot lines. You’ve got the War of the Five Kings tearing the country apart. You’ve got Dany and her adventures. There is the return of Dragons and magic. Over it all hangs the Others and their invasion. It’s a lot and doesn’t always come together in a cohesive whole. It also makes it a hard show to film and bring together. House of the Dragon on the other hand is a much more focused story. It’s going to be pretty focused on the Targaryen civil war and who controls the Iron Throne. I think this is great as it allows for a tighter and easier-to-follow show, but one with plenty of twists and turns.

Lots of Dragons

Dragons are cool. In Game of Thrones, dragons were a driving part of the plot, but also a bit of a letdown. For most of the show, they didn’t really do anything. There was very little dragon-ing. Even when they did start to take a role in events, it was kind of rare that we saw much of them. Still what we did see was generally really dang cool. Well, if you were unhappy with the number of dragons in GoT, then House of the Dragon should fix that. While there were only 3 Dragons in GoT, HoD will feature almost two dozen, and there are plenty of awesome dragon fights to be brought to the screen.

It’s a Finished Story

Most people would agree that the more GoT got away from the books, the worse it was. The show saw a general drop-off in quality once it got past what Martin had written. Well, the good news here is that House of the Dragon is based on a completed story. The middle section, about 80,000 words, in Martin’s Fire and Blood covered the Dance of the Dragons. This is the event that House of the Dragon is based on. That means we have a complete story to adapt here. Oh sure, they are plenty of gaps to fill in, and things will change, but overall the story is completed. There is no need to go off script here.
