The first main teaser trailer for The Rings of Power is out, and its getting people hyped.

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power is coming pretty soon. We’ve had plenty of hints leading up to it. This week they dropped the first main teaser trailer and the longest one we’ve gotten to date. It looks pretty great. And we had a few thoughts while watching it.

Sound & Visuals

Let’s just say right off the bat that this show, so far, looks and sounds great. We get a ton of awesome sweeping visuals of landscapes. We also get to see a ton of cities and buildings. This is a pretty trailer. It also sounds great, with a really amazing score. That shouldn’t be a shock to people though. Howard Shore, who did the score for Peter Jackson’s movies, is working on the sound here. Weta, which did visual effects for Jackson is also involved here. This show is trying really hard to draw visual and musical continuity with the Jackson movies, and it works.

The Races & Their Homes

In the trailer, we also get a look at the major races and their homes. We see shots of this Elven city. It might be a city in Lindon, where Gil-Galad rules. We also get a few shots of Khazad-dum. It looks great, with an amazing amount of indoor greenery. We also get a shot of a human farming village. This is likely a village of the Middle-men, the non-Númenóreans who live in Middle Earth. Of course, we also get plenty of shots of Númenor in this teaser. Lastly, they show off the Harfoots, or the proto-Hobbits. This teaser doesn’t show any builds and a lot of shots of them walking. Are they nomads at this point?

The Teaser Teases the First Age

While The Rings of Power is set in the Second Age of Middle Earth, the teaser shows off a lot of things that could be flashbacks to the dramatic events of the First Age. For instance, we get a longer view at the very first shot we saw from the show, showing off the Trees of Valinor, this is a clear flashback to the first age. We also have a couple of other shots that could be flashbacks.

First off in the teaser we’ve got this shot of a bunch of Elves drawing their swords. It’s a cool shot, with very Arthurian tones, which is a nice nod to how much Tolkien was influenced by those legends. We can’t be sure what this is a shot of, but it might be a flashback to the Oath of Fëanor. This event, when Feanor and his sons swore to recover the Silmarils, directly led to much of the events of the First Age.

We’ve also got this striking shot that is shown when our lady Galadriel is speaking. If I had to guess I’d say this was another flashback. This is quite possibly a look at the War of Wrath or its aftermath. Maybe it’s the power of Morgoth or the sinking of Beleriand.

The Main Cast

The teaser of course shows off a lot of the massive cast in the show. However, it does focus on a few smaller pairings or groups. The first part deals a lot with Elrond and Galadriel, with them talking. If there seems to be a main character for the show right now, it’s Galadriel. The middle section of the teaser focuses on the Harfoots with them getting some voiceovers. It’s still unclear what role they have to play.

Lastly, we get a lot of focus on the Númenóreans. In particular, we get some shots of Elendil and his son Isildur, who will survive the sinking of Númenor and found Gondor. These represent the Faithful. We also get a look at the doomed King Ar-Pharazôn and Queen Tar-Míriel. We are already setting up the Ar-Pharazôn/Elendil conflict, it seems.

Did the Teaser Show Off Sauron?

via Amazon

The shadow of the Dark Lord Sauron hangs over the Rings of Power. We know he is the main villain. However, we haven’t really seen any of him. Or have we? The other week we saw a teaser showing a meteor flying over the land and crashing. Now in The Rings Of Power‘s main teaser, we’ve got images of what appears to be a man emerging from this meteor.  Given that he is coming out of a rock from the sky we can guess this isn’t a normal man. And the visuals we are getting here are pretty close to the infamous Eye of Sauron. Could this be the arrival of the Dark Lord?

It seems like after landing in the meteor the man is found by the Harfoots. I’m guessing that is how they get dragged into the story. There is a bit of symmetry here if the Harfoots, almost certainly unwittingly, help the Dark Lord rise, only for the Hobbits to later be his undoing. Of course, this is speculation, it could be another powerful being. We will just have to see.

Let us know what you’re most excited to see, down in the comments!
