Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Red Guardian Spotlight
It’s the big hitter of the Winter Guard — the Red Guardian is under the spotlight this time from Atomic Mass Games.
Nikolai Krylenko is another mutant who’s joined up with the Winter Guard. With “an energy field that repels nearly all electromagnetic, kinetic, and gravitonic energy forms” Krylenko has assumed the Red Guardian title and wears it with pride. He’s also packing a Vibranium shield that helps him to focus his abilities. Watch out what you send his way because there is a good chance he’ll be sending right back!
“Following the appearance of their mutant natures, the Russian government quickly adopted Nikolai Krylenko and his twin sister Laynia Petrovna from their mother and trained them as warriors under the supervision of a scientific research team. Krylenko adopted the Red Guardian’s shield and title after initially going by the moniker Vanguard, carrying on the tradition established by one of Russia’s most steadfast defenders. Though he is not the first man to have the title of the Red Guardian, few others can claim to have worn it with such pride.”
Red Guardian Spotlight
Red Guardian really comes into his own up close and personal. His basic attack is a Strike that clocks in at Strength 5 and it can push the target a short distance. Or you can opt for a bigger hit with the “Siberian Shield Slam” which is a Strength 6 hit and makes the push turn into a throw for size 3 or less targets.
And speaking of throwing, that Vibranium Shield isn’t just for defense. With the Shield Throw attack you’ll be ignoring LoS and Cover as this range 4 attack bounces around. And yes, it does bounce thanks to the Ricochet rule you can hit another target upto range 3 away.
Now, with a name like Red Guardian you’d probably expect he’s got some good “guarding” abilities — and you’d be right. Focused Repulsion Field allows him to repel Physical or Energy Attacks as a reaction for 2 Power. He also gets to add blanks in his defense rolls to the total. That should make him even tougher to take down.
If an attack does manage to get through, as long as he isn’t dazed, he can convert some of that damage into a resource he can use. He immediately gains 1 Power which he can use to help launch more attacks or prep for another Repulsion Field defense.
That’s it for this Spotlight on the Red Guardian. And we made it the whole time without a Captain America reference!
