‘Stranger Things’ Spin-Offs, ‘Death Note’ & More Announced by Netflix
The Duffer Brothers are bringing Stranger Things spin-offs, plus new Death Note and Stephen King shows to Netflix.
The Stranger Things creators are moving up. The Duffers have created a new production company, Upside Down Pictures, to make more things like Stranger Things. Movies and series that have the magical 1980s Amblin feel to them.
“[We] aim to create the kind of stories that inspired the Duffers growing up – stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins out over cynicism.”
Stranger Things Spin-Offs
First up on the newly minted company’s list is a couple of Stranger Things spin-offs.
During the ramp-up to season four, the Duffer Brothers mentioned that they are ready to expand into new stories when this show is done. Now that the show is slowly moving to its finale, it’s time to start creating new stories. These new Stranger Things spin-offs include a new live-action show based on original ideas from the Duffers. Plus a stage play set in the mythology of the world. Not sure how that will work, but it could be fun.
Other Projects
They’re also leading several other projects in addition to the Stranger Things spin-offs. All will be in cooperation with Netflix, Amblin, and other studios. Here’s what’s on the way…
- A new Deathnote live-action adaptation
- A new series from the creators of Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
- An adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub‘s The Talisman, which is linked to The Dark Tower
While I’m not excited about yet another Death Note adaptation (there are other manga out there), the other two could be interesting. Age of Resistance is amazing and I’ve wanted to see new things from that team for several years. If The Talisman is done right it could be an amazing series. (Small side trip: Lucas was reading it to Max at the end of season four.) Maybe it’ll lead to a Dark Tower movie that isn’t horrible.
No information on dates or casting is out. I’m sure we’ll get more as things ramp into production.
