Social media sites have threads for fans to muse over their ultimate life-saving jam. Can a Spotify playlist guess your Upside Down songs?

Weeks after the hit show’s fourth season premiere, we’re still totally captivated by Stranger Things. If you’ve been on social media since the show dropped, you’ve probably seen your pals posting about their ultimate “save me from Vecna” songs. But did you know that Spotify will curate an Upside Down playlist for you?

Music is a Huge Part of Stranger Things

Since the first chords of the Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” saw Jonathan connecting with Will, music has been an unforgettable part of the Stranger Things experience. The show used some carefully chosen songs to thread throughout the nostalgic series. From the Police playing as Will and Eleven slow dance and the Snow Ball to Suzie and Dustin’s full rendition of The Neverending Story theme song, this 1980s story has some incredible jams.

Spotify Has a Personalized Upside-Down Playlist

Season 4 of the show continues the tradition of carefully chosen songs to weave into the story. When she’s chosen by Vecna to die so he can gain more power, the one thing that keeps Max tethered to the Rightside-Up is the unforgettable “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush playing on repeat.

Now, we all have a few songs that we know would help protect us from Vecna – think of your favorite songs with a deep emotional pull. Something you put on your headphones and for a moment and the whole world melts away.

What’s On Your Upside-Down Song?

It looks like every Upside-Down playlist is composed of 50 different songs based on your library. There are, of course, some classics from the show. Both “Should I Stay or Should I Go” and “Rock You Like a Hurricane” made their way onto the playlist directly from the soundtrack album. “Running Up That Hill” certainly made it onto my Upside-Down playlist, but it’s not from the soundtrack album. Since it’s from Kate Bush’s original album and I listened to the song a lot before Stranger Things, I wonder if it just ended up on my playlist anyway. Either way, no complaints from me!

What was really interesting is the other songs that were chosen. Some of the songs are from bands or artists I haven’t listened to in a long time. I think the last time I listened to “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine” by the Killers was when the first-generation iPod was still a thing.

I’m not 100% sure how Spotify knows which songs would save me from Vecna. What I do know? All the songs picked for me have emotional pull and a lot of them give me nostalgia.

Do you have a Spotify account? What’s on your Upside-Down playlist?
