Five Video Games That Absolutely Deserve a Remake
There have been quite a few video game remakes and remasters recently, and I think these games deserve new life next.
Lollipop Chainsaw is getting a remake, and I gotta say, it wasn’t top on my wish list for remade games. I think it will be a lot of fun to return to that chaotic place, but I never imagined it would be a game to get the remake treatment. But with the Success of Final Fantasy VII, it seems like anything could be possible if we wish for it hard enough. These are just some of the games I’d like to see get remade or remastered and enjoyed all over again.
Bioshock Infinite
At just under ten years old, this is easily the youngest game on my list. And frankly, it was darn near perfect the first time around. Bioshock Infinite got played on the PlayStation in my house when it first came out and again more recently after its release on the Switch. And it remains meaningful, relevant, and poignant. But I’d love to see this same game with remastered and modernized graphics. From the story, to the voice acting, to the battles, nothing else would need an iota of altering. More modern graphics though? I’d unpack Columbia’s terrible secrets all over again.
Legend of the Dragoon
There has been talks and rumors of this one getting a remake for a few years now, but with no substantial news or updates it’s hard to say if this is happening for sure anymore. This 1999 JRPG is your pretty standard high fantasy turn based adventure. Borrowing a lot of elements from other JRPGs at the time, this is a game that we enjoyed because it was like those other games that we enjoyed. But let’s be honest, they were all enjoyable games. A Legend of the Dragoon remake has the potential to learn from itself and make something tropey and a lot like the other games we already like, but also new and modern.
Ecco the Dolphin
When you get right down to it, Ecco the Dolphin was a bonkers game. You’re a dolphin trying to find your pod and eventually get caught up in a battle to save the world from an extraterrestrial threat. With five releases between 1992 and 2000, this isn’t a game that’s been returned to in twenty-three years. But maybe it’s time. There’s been talk of reviving Ecco for the Switch, but I want to see a full update. Modern graphics, a new alien invader, the whole nine yards. Sometimes you need a game that off-the-walls weird on its face and Ecco can be that dolphin.
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy IX is one of the best games in the series. It might be my favorite. And though the cover art is gorgeous and the cut-scenes are downright revolutionary for the game’s 2000 release date, the graphics are a little goofy by 2023 standards. Still, this is an incredible game that could easily thrive once more with the reboot or remaster treatment that FF VII got. If not though, FF IX is getting an animated series sometime soon.
Chrono Trigger
On more than one occasion I’ve heard Chrono Trigger described as the greatest game of all time. Whether or not that’s the case is up to you, but this 1995 RPG has a place in many hearts. Like many games on this list, this one was darn near perfect the first time, but could benefit from a fresh coat of updated graphics. With Akira Toriyama’s (Dragon Ball) iconic character design, having characters mostly shown as tiny little sprites is almost a waste. Chrono Cross got a remaster in 2022, and I think it’s Chrono Trigger‘s turn.
What video game do you think deserves a reboot or remaster? What’s your favorite older video game? Do you think any on my list are already perfect the way they are? Let us know in the comments!
