Age of Sigmar: Scared, Potter? – The Mages of Arcane Cataclysm
Tzeentch and Teclis are pulling out all the stops for Mage Fight 2022.
The latest Age of Sigmar Battlebox, Arcane Cataclysm, is up for preorder. As with all its predecessors, the box is packed to the brim with gorgeous models, new rules, and useful accessories. The Lumineth bring their best with some Bladelords, Dawnriders, and Sentinels, easily able to counter their sorcerous foe at every turn. However, Tzeentch didn’t come to play, and his forces include some Tzaangors, a massive block of Acolytes, and the deadly Enlightened. Leading the two forces are a pair of powerful mages, the Scinari Enlightener and the Curseling in a brand new sculpt. These heroes are bringing incredible arcane might to the battlefield, and while they aren’t going to win many fist fights, they shouldn’t need to.
Scinari Enlightener
In typical fashion for a warrior of Teclis, the Enlightener is perfectly balanced defensively and offensively. She has a solid ranged option with her magical blasts, some decent melee with her blade and staff, and the typical heavy cardboard armor of a mage.
However, the Enlightener is truly in her element when it comes to magic. She gets two casts and unbinds every turn, and once per game, she can decide not to roll and cast with a 9. The spell can still be unbound, but getting an autocast is still a potent ability. Not content with that nastiness, once per turn, she can choose to have one of her successful spells immediately resolve a second time on a 3+. Combined with her signature spell to share any wounds she suffers with enemy heroes, she can easily do a kamikaze play to take down a pair of powerful enemies. She’s bringing a massive boost to the Lumineth, not that they needed it.
Curseling
While the Curseling was a powerful special character in the World That Was, apparently Tzeentch liked him so much that he decided to make more. Finally in plastic and with a new dynamic sculpt, the Curseling has lost none of his edge and gained a solid amount of power. He’s tougher than a standard mage thanks to being a Chaos Warrior, and his sword can do a surprising amount of work in the combat phase.
While he may appear weaker magically at first glance, this is just another of Tzeentch’s many tricks. His ability to steal the magic of others is no longer a spell, and he can reduce the casts of his enemies when he uses it. This is an easy way to hamstring low-level enemy magic or drain the punch of powerful foes like Kroak or Teclis himself. While he isn’t the powerhouse that he once was, he more embodies Tzeentchian trickery. To me, that’s an upgrade.
