Let’s Talk About That Effin’ Absurd ‘Chainsaw Man’ Trailer
The third Chainsaw Man trailer is officially here, and we’ve never been more excited for this animated gorefest.
Chainsaw Man has been one of the most anticipated upcoming animes of the year. Based on an absolutely bonkers manga by the same name, it follows Denji as he becomes a half-man-half-chainsaw in order to help fight devils. Does that sound like nonsense? I thought so too! But give the manga a chapter or two and you too will have your interest in the anime piqued at the very least.
Chainsaw Man
“Denji is a teenage boy living with a Chainsaw Devil named Pochita. Due to the debt his father left behind, he has been living a rock-bottom life while repaying his debt by harvesting devil corpses with Pochita.
One day, Denji is betrayed and killed. As his consciousness fades, he makes a contract with Pochita and gets revived as “Chainsaw Man”–a man with a devil’s heart.” – Official Crunchyroll Synopsis
The official Crunchyroll description of Chainsaw Man may read like the ramblings of the kid everyone avoided in your high school creative writing class, but the end product is surprising and refreshing. And luckily, both Studio MAPPA and Crunchyroll seem to have completely understood the assignment.

Unfortunately, how fun Chainsaw Man is doesn’t reflect as well as I’d like to see in the trailers. It’s over the top, action-packed, and violent, sure. But it’s also weird and funny and thoughtful. We will have to wait until October when the show begins streaming on Crunchyroll to see that aspect of it for ourselves, but based on the trailers so far, we’re pretty excited.
Studio MAPPA
MAPPA is the Tokyo-based animation studio behind Chainsaw Man. And they’re already responsible for many of our favorite animes to date. Jujutsu Kaisen, Dorohedoro, Yuri!! On Ice, and the final season of Attack on Titan are all Studio MAPPA’s work. Dorohedoro and Jujutsu Kaisen are standouts to me for the same genre of “over the top violence but sprinkle in the comedy,” that they’ll be aiming for with Chainsaw Man, so I’m optimistic that this show may have found the exact right team to make it a success.
Ryu Nakayama (One Punch Man, Jujutsu Kaisen) is directing the project with Hiroshi Seko (Jujutsu Kaisen, Mob Psycho 100) writing the screenplay.
