A chilling preview reveals new monsters from cult classics and also the void of space. Check out these Spelljammer reveals!

Alright. Look. Space is bad enough as it is without clowns in it. And yet that’s exactly what WotC has done. They’ve gone and taken about the scariest place you can find, outside of the ocean, because I mean have you seen it?

And then they added clowns. And not just regular clowns either. Space Clowns.

Spelljammer Preview Reveals New Monsters

What we’re looking at here is a modified space galleon. They’ve put a big klaxon horn on the bow and they’ve got a pie-flinging catapilt on the aft-castle.

And yeah, pretty much it’s exactly what you would expect. Space clowns with deadly pies and alarm horns. Very much inspired by schlocky b movies like Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and now canon in D&D. These are described as “ultra-violent” clowns, and yeah, I believe it.

And that’s not all. We recently got a look at more of the gorgeous art of Spelljammer. It’s as much Flash Gordon as it is Star Trek. So basically think of any episode of the original series where they run into one of those “parallel planets” and you’ve got about the right tone for Spelljammer.

Of course, it’s not just about space. It’s very much about that view of space as an ocean—there’s a reason they did their own version of The Wellerman as part of the Spelljammer Trailer.

And that’s because Spelljammer takes place in the Astral Sea. You’ll find magical galleons.

Gorgeous space whales, whose haunting song you can all but hear when you look at them.

These are kindori, better known as space whales. I can’t wait to encounter them in the depths of the Astral plane. But there are less silly, dangerous things out there too. Including the infamous Neogi, who fly in spider ships, preying on wayward travelers.

And of course, everyone’s favorite, Giant Space Hamsters.

They are officially beasts, which means your druid can indeed wildshape into one.
