Rings of Power is dropping two episodes so you can mini-binge. Amazon also shared the time the episodes will drop – mark your calendar!

With less than a month till the long-awaited series debuts, Amazon has let fans know when they can watch the first two episodes. If only they stuck with a reasonable time (for the US – I live here, and I’m selfish) for the whole series.

The Rings of Power is planned as a fifty-hour, five-season series. It’s covering thousands of years. The series director, J.A. Bayona, has said that it’s more than television – “it’s a new form we’re creating here.” They’re also aiming to bring something new to long-time fans, and out-action Game of Thrones. Showrunner Patrick McKay told Empire:

“The siege at Helm’s Deep is so iconic and amazing that it was like, ‘What’s a different thing that we can do that still feels like Middle-earth but is unique for this story? The show has a lot of action in it — more so than any television or streaming show that we’ve seen. Every episode has set pieces, creatures, battles and white-knuckle fights to the death. But instead of having 10,000 Orcs fighting 10,000 men, what’s it like to have one Orc in your face, in your kitchen? What’s it like trying to kill an Orc when you’ve never killed an Orc before?”

The series is not trying to compete with Peter Jackson’s trilogy, but you may notice it takes cues from them. They’re both produced by New Line and Howard Shore wrote the score for both. There will be some connection, though The Rings of Power has limited source material compared to Jackson’s films. Tolkien didn’t write any books set in this time period, so there are some gaps to fill and new characters.

We’re going to be getting something a little different than what’s on the page, something that works more for the screen and welcomes a broader audience – not just Tolkien purists.

The Rings of Power Synopsis & Cast

The ensemble cast is huge and includes Peter Tait (who was in the original movie trilogy). It also includes faces you would recognize from Doctor Who and Westworld. There aren’t any huge names, but I think that will work out better for the show.

“This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power arrives on Amazon Prime Video on September 2.
