There are a few official Attack on Titan video games out there. But this fan made game may just blow them all out of the person-eating water.

We’ve seen Attack on Titan video games before. We’ve seen so many of them. And for whatever reason, they’re never quite right. I won’t say that they’re bad, exactly, but they’re missing something. It’s like the scope and spirit of the show are kneecapped to make this game. Only that ignores exactly what people want to do when playing an Attack On Titan game. That’s right, zoom around like Spider-Man and kill giants with swords. But an indie developer may have made the Attack on Titan game of everyone’s dreams and released it for free.

Swammy’s Attack on Titan

What started as a fun solo project for an indie developer named Swammy may have turned into something huge. Early in 2021, he began a YouTube channel, breaking down the development of this project. And at the time, this was supposed fun, small, and experimental. But once he started gaining a lot of attention, Swammy decided to take an example of his gameplay to Tik Tok, and fans really began to take notice – in a good way.

Swammy continued developing this game and eventually made a demo. He even released this demo to fellow fans out in the world, entirely free to play. By mid-2022, his fan project had millions of views and hundreds of thousands of downloads. Turns out that when somebody puts a lot of love into a game, creating the exact content that fellow fans want, it attracts some attention.

Fans feel that the basic mechanics of Swammy’s Attack on Titan game feel much more natural than many of the official games. Some have gone as far as to compare it to the recent Spider-Man games. This is exactly what you should aim for if you’re making an Attack on Titan game. The fun part is joining the Survey Corps (from a safe distance) and killing Titans (through the risk of actually getting eaten).

At this time, the fan-made Attack On Titan game is available on Unreal Engine 5 for PC and Android. But it looks like Swammy will only be continuing work on the PC version. It will remain a free project, for fans by fans.

About Attack On Titan

“Known in Japan as Shingeki no Kyojin, many years ago, the last remnants of humanity were forced to retreat behind the towering walls of a fortified city to escape the massive, man-eating Titans that roamed the land outside their fortress. Only the heroic members of the Scouting Legion dared to stray beyond the safety of the walls – but even those brave warriors seldom returned alive. Those within the city clung to the illusion of a peaceful existence until the day that dream was shattered, and their slim chance at survival was reduced to one horrifying choice: kill – or be devoured!” – Official Synopsis from Crunchyroll

The Attack on Titan manga ran from 2009 through 2021 with 34 volumes in total. The anime is still going, but getting ready to wrap up with the Final-Season-Part-Three scheduled to air next year.

Have you played Swammy’s fan-made Attack On Titan game? How do you think it compares to the official games? Which of the branches would you join in the AoT universe? Let us know in the comments!
