Spooky Season is here. With October hours away, it’s time to look at the best spells for the spooky season—they’re a real scream.

Here we are, folks. Pumpkin Spice is back on the menu. Apples and orange leaves adorn the shelves of craft stores. And mixed in among it all, spooky, scary skeletons ready to send shivers down your spine. That means it’s time for spooky season.

And in D&D you can be extra spooky with the right spells. If you want to be a gravely ghoulish figure like Citizen Doctor Abraham Mehermblur.

Then you’ll want to grab some spells that play up your mastery of life and death, as well as spiders, skeletons, and other things.

Cause Fear

First things first, if you want to be a master of all things spookable, you’ve got to be spooky yourself. And the best way to do that is with the spell Cause Fear.

This spell “awakens the sense of mortality” in one creature you can see. Which is absolutely horrifying. You basically convince one creature that it’s 3 am and they’re trying to get to rest but are grappling with the fact that they will one day die and tomorrow they’re just going to what, get up? Go to work? Like it’s normal?!

Web

Can’t be spooky on existential dread alone. You’ve got to have ambiance. Got to have some gloom to go with the doom. And the Web spell is a great way to do exactly that.

Web creates a mass of thick, sticky webbing that can ensnare any creature that enters them or starts their turn within them. If they fail a save they’re restrained, which means you can hold foes still and be gloomy at the same time.

Obscuring Mist

Similar to Web in many ways, Obscuring Mist is all about creating that mist-soaked atmosphere. Only this one has the benefit of obscuring your entire party so that nobody knows how many of you there actually are.

And what’s scarier than the unknown?

Wither and Bloom

This showcases a mastery of life and death all in a second-level spell slot. Invoke life and death upon a 10-foot radius sphere. Deal damage to any creature you choose in the area and then also heal one creature of your choice in the area. Not bad when you want to convince everyone that your power is absolute.

Darkness

When all else fails, let the shadows cling to you as a thin film clings to the top of a glass of milk left out too long. Let the darkness be your ally. Your constant companion. You can take the darkness that lurks within your heart and show it to the world in a sizable radius.
