Star Trek 4, set in the Kelvin universe, was announced with much fanfare and confusion at the start of the year. It looks like it’s already dead.

Back in February, Paramount dropped a bunch of news about upcoming projects for streaming and theaters during an investor call. That included a new movie set in the Kelvin timeline that was set to come out next year and it would include the original cast. The news shocked fans – and apparently, it also shocked the actors that were supposed to be participating. They had no idea a movie was being made before it was discussed on a Wall Street investor’s call.

It seems a lot of things weren’t in place at the time of the announcement. While they had a December 22, 2023 theatrical release announced, the date wasn’t greenlit. The movie had no budget set and the script wasn’t complete. In the time between the announcement and this week, Paramount poached Matt Shakman – the director for Marvel’s Fantastic 4 – for the project. He recently walked.

The sequel is dead in the water for now.

Star Trek 4 – Why It’s Not Necessary

There’s really no reason to revive the Kelvin timeline at this point. The first movie came out in 2009 when Trek was in a lull and needed something new to keep it relevant for younger audiences and present in pop culture. Given how successful the Paramount+ shows have been since they kicked off in 2017, there’s plenty of Trek content out there. There’s no reason to shove a new sequel out there.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the cast and would like to see them back together. That alone doesn’t make for a good movie. At this point expanding Discovery or Strange New Worlds into a movie for the big screen is more logical. Star Trek works on the big screen – it’s proven. I’d buy a ticket to see Pike and crew in a theater.

Where would you like to see this go?
