The Worst ‘Final Fantasy’ Heroes of All Time
We love Final Fantasy, but not every character is a winner. These are some of the worst Final Fantasy heroes of all time.
With fifteen core games and dozens of playable party members, The Final Fantasy series has some of the best video game characters ever conceived of. Unfortunately, they also have a few absolute stinkers. Hey, it’s okay. They can’t all be winners. These are some of our favorite least-favorite characters in the franchise. Because let’s be honest. Even the worst party members have a special place in our hearts.
Cid Pollendina (Final Fantasy IV)
A character named Cid shows up in almost every Final Fantasy game. So it’s a shame that FF IV’s Cid is wasted on this dude. Sure, he’s not as unlikeable as some other characters. But he’s just so useless as a party member! No MP, lowest odds to hit, and a skill called “Analyze” that effectively does nothing. We have limited room in our parties and filling a spot with Cid Pollendina is a waste. Luckily, he’s only a temporary party member.
Gau (Final Fantasy VI)
Gau has a lot of potential as an interesting character, but they manage to miss the mark with him completely. He’s a feral child who joins the crew and has Rages that he can learn from monsters. Which is admittedly pretty darn cool. But it takes so much grinding to get him up to par. And while his backstory is interesting, he speaks entirely in gibberish so it’s hard to connect with the character. Gau could have been great with some minor player-minded changes, but instead, he’s just pretty annoying across the board.
Quina Quen (Final Fantasy IX)
While Gua and Cid feel like near misses, Quina leaves us asking, “Why bother?” They have almost no impact on the story or battles. But they do have a mini-game! … Which time consuming, repetitive, and not fun. You can unlock Quina’s special abilities, which involve consuming enemies and can be pretty cool. But as far as powers go they can be a little persnickety and not pan out the way you’re hoping.
Hope Estheim (Final Fantasy XIII)
I will never understand adventuring characters whose entire personality seems to be “the group complainer.” Why are you there? There’s a pretty fair argument here that the writers perfectly captured the moodiness of a fourteen-year-old mixed with his traumatic background. But it still doesn’t make for a fun game-playing experience. Hope has some pretty okay character growth by the end, but that doesn’t mean I enjoyed his addition to my party dynamics.
Cait Sith (Final Fantasy VII)
I hate Cait Sith. Playing through FF VII for the first time I was consistently mad about Cait Sith. He randomly joins the party, is nearly useless in battles, has an entire death scene, and when you think you may be free of him HE COMES BACK! And to top it all off, he’s a Shinra division leader in disguise.
Who is your least favorite Final Fantasy hero? Do you unironically like any of the heroes on our list? If you could erase one character from Final Fantasy history, who would it be and why? Let us know in the comments!
Happy Adventuring!
