One D&D’s first playtest is its biggest yet. And now, WotC wants your feedback. The first One D&D playtest survey is out.

When WotC launched D&D 5th Edition back in 2014, it had come off of the considerable disruption that was 4th Edition. D&D had to claw back its lead from Paizo’s Pathfinder, which briefly supplanted D&D as the best-selling RPG. A trick it managed by letting people play D&D 3.5 but better.

Then they launched 5th Edition. And D&D grew to the biggest it’s ever been. Now, a few weeks on, the playtest for One D&D, the next, editionless generation of D&D has drawn a massive crowd.

In fact, according to WotC’s data, more people have playtested the One D&D character origins packet than the entirety of folks who playtested 5th Edition. Now WotC wants to know what you think. You can shape the future of D&D by answering One D&D’s playtest survey.

One D&D Playtest Survey – Character Origins

One of the biggest aims at WotC in the early days was figuring out how to talk to players. As one of the architects of the Open Gaming License put it, they wanted to avoid the mistakes that led to the death of TSR:

“I know now what killed TSR. It wasn’t trading card games, it wasn’t Dragon Dice. Nor was it the success of other companies. It was a near-total inability to listen to its customers, hear what they were saying, and make changes to make those customers happy. TSR died because it would not listen.”

Which led to more involved playtests, systems for collecting feedback, and a lot of analytics. This is why, when WotC posts that One D&D is their biggest yet, it probably bodes well for the future of D&D overall.

Of course, some of us will have to come to grips that it’s the community as a whole. And not everyone plays the same way or wants the same thing out of D&D. So make sure your voice is heard. You can do this by filling out (or in) this survey.

One D&D’s Future is Up to You

This is, of course, the first of many. And from WotC’s commentary, we know they look at what is satisfying people and what doesn’t seem to pass muster. We’ve seen subclasses get revised within 6 months from Unearthed Arcana release to the final product. But 2024 is a ways off.

So whatever you think about One D&D’s new core rules change to races, backgrounds, and feats. Now’s your chance to let WotC know think.
