There are still a few key units missing from the Leagues of Votann. Hopefully these get added in eventually.

After the Games Workshop preview we have a pretty good idea of all the cool new units coming to the Leagues of Votann. It’s a pretty well rounded batch for sure. The army has a great core of options from which players can build from. That said, it’s still feels like there is plenty of room to grow.

We saw a similar thing happen when the Adeptus Mechanicus was introduced. Fans noted the lack of things like a transport and a flyer option. Eventually, GW added those as well as a few more units. We think this is going to be a similar case for the Leagues of Votann. This is essentially a “first pass” to get the core of the army out there and we think that later GW will fill out the roster with more specialized units.

So what are those units? That’s what we’re here to talk about today!

More Unique Character Options

Right now, we only know about one unique character for the entire Leagues of Votann Army Roster — Ûthar the Destined. While he seems like a neat character and we want to learn more about him, a single unique character feels lacking especially when you compare it with other armies. Now bear in mind we just learned about the other characters in the army, too. Units like the Einhyr Champion, Brôkhyr Iron Masters, and the Grimnyr. These are all possible options for unique characters in the future.

A Flyer or Two

So far Game Workshop hasn’t dropped any hints at a flyer. Looking back at the old Squat Armory, the original army had two flyers. The Iron Eagle Gyrocopter and the Overlord Armoured Airship. These were from the Epic range but it’s not that far of a stretch to see them as 40k units. The bigger problem is that basically both of these units have been repurposed by GW.

The Iron Eagle Gyrocopter seems like it was snagged by the Archaeopter from the Adeptus Mechanicus. Sure, you could replace the wings with engines but then it’s just a Stormtalon Gunship…which is already a unit, too.

As far as the Overlord Armoured Airship, well, now there’s an entire faction in Age of Sigmar that uses those. They even took part of the name: Kharadron Overlords. I’m sensing some crossover potential but really that’s just fanfic and won’t happen. Or could it? I dare you GW. I. Dare. You.

A Land Train?

The Hekaton Land Fortress is cool and all. We’re excited to see it in person. And we’re hoping that GW has plans in the future for some sort of trailer hitch option. Hey, they did it for Necromunda with the Cargo-8 Ridgehauler!

Now we do need to admit a Land Train is kind of a silly…it’s not really a train if it doesn’t have tracks to ride on, right? So at that point it’s just a really big engine with a bunch of trailers behind it. Anyhow, it’s kind of an iconic thing from the old Squat Army so I can see why some folks are disappointed. But I think the idea still has some merit.

What was neat about idea is that it’s basically a huge, moving fortress with different sections that could do different things. I think that concept could still apply. Seeing as how the new big rig for the Leagues of Votann is called a Hekaton Land Fortress, I think GW might be on to something.

If nothing else I’m expecting to see some more variants of the Hekaton Land Fortress. We all know that Game Workshop loves to take a “base kit” and create more options. I could easily see an even more gunned-up version of the Hekaton Land Fortress introduced. One with less transport capacity but with more bang-for-your-buck if you catch my drift.

More Bikes?

The new Hernkyn Pioneer is a cool trike option for the army — but where are the bikes? The ones with just two anti-grav wheels instead of 3. Squats were big into the bikes before so it’s a little strange that all those options basically got rolled into the Pioneers. This seems like an area GW could easily expand upon with more units. Especially if they were Troop options. Speaking of which…

More Troop Options

This is our final spot we’d love to see get more attention. It seems like the Hearthkyn Warriors are doing all the heavy lifting in the Troop slot. While that’s probably fine to start the army it does feel like this is one area that could certainly expand. Maybe with a bike squad option as mentioned above or maybe with some other archetype unit. We’ll have to wait and see if/what GW comes up with.

We’re still waiting on the full release but we’re already wishlisting some more units for the Leagues — what units do you want to see?
