One of the traditional monsters of spooky season, but often ignored or paired with other monsters. These great werewolf movies stand alone.

Werewolf by Night is out, so it’s a great time to talk about werewolves. An iconic, occasionally misunderstood, classic monster is getting its day in the sun! Or full moon, rather. Here are some of Danni, Martin, and Chris‘ favorite werewolf-focused movies, comics, and books.

The crew hit some amazing classics in this week’s show, but they missed several that are worth your time. They didn’t get to Twilight or Underworld, but I think we’re all aware of those vampire vs. werewolf franchises. How about something a bite off the beaten path? Here are my werewolf movie picks…

Good Manners (2017)

From Brazil. A wealthy woman hires a nurse, Clara, to help her through her pregnancy and to be the nanny for her soon-to-be-born child. This is no ordinary baby. The full moon brings the birth of a werewolf and Clara makes it her mission to care for and protect it. This also isn’t your average lycanthrope horror movie – it’s a haunting tale with both violence and empathy.

November (2017)

A grim fairytale set in a Medieval Estonian village inhabited by personified Black Death, where a group of peasants uses magic and folk remedies to survive the winter. There is a werewolf in the villagers’ midst and it seeks a sleepwalking baroness. This fever dream is shot in gorgeous black and white, and its story is deeply strange.

The Company of Wolves (1984)

This one terrified me as a kid. The wolf transformations are obviously inspired by An American Werewolf in London (which I wasn’t allowed to see yet) but have their own flavor. Christopher Tucker did the special effects, they’re impressive for the time and the budget they had to work with. It’s very much of its era with great animatronics and practical effects.

Wolves and werewolves lurk throughout the dreams of young Rosaleen (Sarah Patterson), who imagines that she must journey through a dark forest to live with her grandmother (Angela Lansbury). When Rosaleen meets a rugged hunter in the woods, she discovers that she has an animal-like attraction to him, leading to a macabre turn of events. The lupine-centric film also features stories within the main tale, told by both Rosaleen and her grandma, all of which have a supernatural bent.
