Fight Over Who Gets To Build The Dungeon in ‘Grim Dark Dungeon Master’
Grim Dark Dungeon Master is an upcoming dungeon crawling board game with a familiar feel but is something entirely new.
Grim Dark Dungeon Master is the sort of game that acknowledges its fun to be the villain. It harkens back to the days of HeroQuest when one player controlled every aspect of the dungeon’s construction and the rest of the players had to deal with whatever was thrown at them.
However, Grim Dark Dungeon Master does things a little differently.
Battle Over the Dungeon Itself
Unlike a traditional tile-based dungeon builder/crawler, Grim Dark Dungeon Master gives the heroes some control over where and how the dungeon is constructed.
As the heroes purge the evil from the various tiles, they will flip the tile over revealing some new boon to the heroes. One such benefit is the arrow tiles. These tiles must point toward the hero’s objective. Meaning the boss’s lair tile must be placed to fit within those restrictions.
This gives the heroes a lot of control over what areas they can focus on without having to worry about tons of backtracking.
Simple and Fast Combat
Each enemy minion has only a single hit point, so there’s so much fussing with damage tokens. Plus the included acrylic standees have their combat stats listed right on the base.
In Grim Dark Dungeon Master, combatants roll one or more red dice to determine their attack strength and one or more blue dice for defense. Whoever rolls more icons on their dice wins the fight! Streamlined combat keeps the gameplay moving.
Each hero has a unique set of cards that determine their abilities. Each card is placed onto the hero’s player mat, into one of the appropriate slots. However, when a hero takes damage, an ability card is flipped face down. This makes that ability unusable and clogs up that slot on the player mat. So, each wound must be carefully considered. No more tanking at full strength until you hit 0 HP!
