Interested in signing up with the Weyland-Yutani corporation? Try out your new life in space with the Alien RPG Starter Set, free on Roll20.

Roll20 knows what season it is. That’s why they’re offering free versions of two of the most popular horror RPG starter sets from now until October 31st. If you want to tap into the atmospheric, mounting horror that comes from realizing not only are you alone with a monster, but you’re alone with a monster in space, the worst place to be.

And on top of all of that, the ship you’re on (or the people aboard it) might also be trying to kill you.

Trust me, it’s really quite fun once you give it a chance. There’s a reason the Alien RPG won all those awards. It blends cinematic moments with inter-party conflicts in a way that is fun to play out. And you can find it out for yourself. Step into a world of acid-filled xenomorphs, and milk-filled androids. Step into the world of Alien.

Alien RPG Starter Set – Free On Roll20

As you might have surmised from the name, the Alien RPG Starter set contains everything you need to start playing the game. While it doesn’t have the full core rulebook, it has a streamlined, easy-to-pick-up version of the Alien RPG ruleset. If you’ve ever played an RPG with quickstart rules before, you know the type.

If not, they’re enough to get you playing and give you a full picture of the rules. But more advanced concepts are saved for the core book once you’ve gotten your feet wet. Hopefully not with Alien blood though.

But alongside this, you get the Chariot of the Gods Cinematic scenario, complete with full floor plans (using Roll20’s Dynamic Lightning feature) as well as five pre-generated characters, sheets for all the NPCs, and a full-color map of chartered space in 2183.

All of which is nice. But Chariot of the Gods, especially, is what you’ll want to sink your teeth into. This scenario showcases how awful the world can be, and how much fun you can have dealing with it. If you want a taste of the essence of the movie Alien, here’s a snippet:

The job was routine, the money fair. Then the damn company diverted you to answer a distress call from a ship that disappeared almost 80 years ago — a derelict carrying something bizarre, twisted, and alien. What the ship’s frozen crew brought back with them was bad enough—what they themselves were turning into was a bloody nightmare. Add to that an annoying sensor ghost shadowing you in the void, and your stress level is shot.

It’s all a bit much.
