A new Trigun Stampede trailer reveals a little more about the upcoming series, and it looks like we’re in for a few surprises.

The second Trigun Stampede trailer was released over the weekend and it may have created just as many new questions as it answered. But I just may be more interested in it than I was before. I’ll let you judge it for yourself.

Returning and New Characters

I am personally elated to see the return of Meryl Stryfe and Nicholas D. Wolfwood. Though there seem to be a few key changes. Maryl is apparently a reporter now instead of a representative of the Bernadelli Insurance Company and working alongside a brand new character named Roberto De Niro. Which is just an absolutely fantastic anime character name.

Curiously, a certain Milly Thompson seems to be missing from the lineup of largely return characters. She was one fourth of the original show and manga’s core cast, so leaving her out would be a massive oversight. Which leads me to wonder if Milly will show up in Trigun Stampede and if so, how?

A Whole New Timeline

After the first announcement and trailer, I thought that Trigun Stampede may be a prequel to the series we know and love. But the second trailer makes it clear that this will definitely be a reimagining of the story. Meryl’s job is completely different, as is who I assume is her new partner. Additionally, Vash seems to be meeting them- and maybe Wolfwood as well- for the first time.

The setting, animals, and world-building, all look pretty seriously to classic Trigun, so I wonder if Vash and Knives will have the same backstory this time around as well. But a fresh take on the entire story is something that I think I’m actually looking forward to more than a straight prequel. We knew Vash’s past already and didn’t need to rehash it again. But an alternate, parallel universe; could be fun.

About Trigun

Originally published in 1995, Trigun ran for sixteen volumes and with a twenty-six episode run in 1998. It followed Vash The Stampede, a man with a 6 billion double-dollar bounty for crimes against humanity. But when people meet him instead of finding a monster, they find a goofball pacifist who’s more interested in amicable problem-solving and donuts than shootouts. Though he is surprisingly good at shootouts. It’s a show that starts as a western and takes a hard turn toward Sci-Fi with a lot of important questions along the way about the importance of life and the nature of being a non-violent person in a very violent world.

It’s a modern classic and both the show and the manga are entirely complete. So if you haven’t had a chance to dive into Trigun, you can know that there won’t ever be an indefinite hiatus to leave you on nor will you catch up with the simulcast and have to wait weekly for new episodes.

Crunchyroll will stream Trugun Stampede starting in January 2023. The show will feature Kenji Mutou (BEASTARS) directing, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Vash the Stampede, Sakura Ando as Meryl Stryfe, Yoshimasa Hosoya as Nicholas D. Wolfwood, Kenji Matsuda as Robert De Niro, Junya Ikeda as Knives Millions, Tomoyo Kurosawa as, Young Vash, Yumiri Hanamori as Young Knives, and Maaya Sakamoto as Rem Saverem.

Are you excited about Trigun Stampede or are you still dubious? How did you feel about the classic Trigun? Do you think we’ll see Milly return, or do you think she’ll be missing from this project entirely? Let us know in the comments!

Love & Peace, Adventurers!
