‘Velma’ Trailer Shows She’s Has Gone R-Rated for Her New Series
The glasses wearing nerd of Mystery Inc. is getting her own animated show, but it’s nothing like the classic cartoon. Check out the first Velma trailer.
Velma will explore the origin of the smartest member of the Scooby Doo gang. It’s clear by this trailer that this isn’t for kids and we’re going to get a dose of comedic subversion and adult content. It feels like they’re going for a Harley Quinn vibe (I love the show) with the classic Hanna-Barbera IP. It’s not exactly the best pairing – at least based on the first trailer.
Producer Mindy Kaling (who is also voicing Velma) introduced the it at NYCC by proclaiming, “it starts with a murder, bitch!”
Reports from the panel at NYCC have described the show as an adult comedy that focuses on raunchy hijinks and violence. The tone is why there’s no Scooby. Velma takes the lead, Shaggy/Norville is straight-edge rather than a pot head, and Fred is a bit of a jerk. It is very much not a reboot of the classic. Based on some of the reactions, the tone of the show may be too far from the original.
The geekiest member of the Mystery Inc. gang came out this week in a Halloween special. More representation is always appreciated. There’s no official word on if this Velma will be queer in this series, as well. She apparently flirts with both Fred and Daphne in the pilot, and everyone has a thing for everyone else. So… who knows?

“VELMA is an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and under appreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”
Velma and the gang arrive on HBOMax next year.
