We’ve seen King of the Koopas on the attack. This new Super Mario Bros. trailer shows what he’s after: Princess Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom.

For those hoping to get more of the flat-out weirdness of the 1993 movie thirty years later – you aren’t getting more inappropriate humor or questionable costuming or delightfully stupid creatures that dance in elevators. Sorry, that was a one-time thing that you can buy on Amazon for $3.99 because it’s not streaming anywhere. You’re welcome for that information.

The upcoming movie brings in a ton of characters and locations from the games (as it should) – plus other games in the Nintendo catalog. In order to fight Bowser and save the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario trains on a course that’s taken straight from the 1980s side scroller. He takes on Donkey Kong on a red steel girder. The story is classic, and the universe and the animation look great. Oh, and there are karts. There’s just this little casting choice that throws it off.

Warning: small rant ahead. I miss voice actors being cast for big animated movies. Voices that fit the character, not just names that look good on marketing material. Pratt’s voice coming out of Mario’s mouth is just bad. It’s such a blah, bland choice. Charles Martinet has been voicing the character for thirty years, he’s alive and available (he’s got a cameo in this movie). Even if he wasn’t up for it, there are other better options. Nanni Baldini? Maybe?

Beyond my complaint about the industry as a whole, it looks like this celebration of Nintendo is going to be a lot of fun for fans of all ages.
