How to Paint Bolt Action Pin Markers

If you ever played Bolt Action, all of their newest starter sets come with these great little pin markers. Learn how you can quickly upgrade them to make them easier to use.

The newest Bolt Action Starter Set comes with red pin markers. They are handy dials with engraved numbers to use in your games, but they are hard to read as they come out of the box. To correct that I painted them with Army Painter Paints. This quick project changed them from this…

To this. They’re not perfect but they are so easy to read now compared to what they were – and that is what matters.

What You Need

To do this quick project, all you need is the markers and the following items…

  • Black Primer
  • Black Paint
  • White Paint
  • Optional Matt Varnish

I used The Army Painter Paints for this project. Below is a video version of the tutorial if you prefer something more visual.

A Very Quick Summary

If you are unable to watch the video above, here are the steps I followed:

  1. Prime the bases black
  2. Drybrush the numbers white
  3. Clean up the dial with black paint
  4. Go over the numbers again with white paint to increase the contrast
  5. Paint the dial surfaces with Matt Varnish to give added (yet optional) protection

This was a very quick and easy project. In total it took me a couple of hours to do 24 of these dials. Some people go a little further and paint the flames too. Some people even paint the pointer a different color to make it easier to see what number is being looked at. After painting up the dials, I popped on the flame markers and this project was done!

Wrapping it up…

Thank you for joining me in this quick post about how I upgraded my Bolt Action pin markers. Hopefully, it inspired you to take on a similar project. It makes a huge difference in making the numbers on the Bolt Action dials much more readable from a tabletop distance away.
