‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Crosses $1B at Global Box Office
The Way of Water has crossed the billion-dollar mark at the global box office this week – and it still has time to swim.
The fact that I’m not a fan of the movie doesn’t negate that the sequel has been extremely popular and loved by audiences. The box office proves it. From Variety:
“James Cameron’s long-delayed sequel to ‘Avatar’ opened in mid-December with $134 million in North America and $435 million globally, and it’s remained a huge draw in the days since its release. So far, the Disney and 20th Century film has generated $317.1 million in North America and $712.7 million overseas, bringing its global tally to $1.025 billion. It’s surpassed ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ as the second highest-grossing movie of the year, and it’s the third highest of the pandemic era.”
It’s the fastest to reach $1 billion in 2022 (sixth fastest overall), with a trajectory similar to that of Spider-Man: No Way Home last year.
The Billion Dollar Movie Club
2019 had nine movies cross the line. Huge box office takes weren’t uncommon during Marvel’s first saga. It’s been a hard number to hit post-pandemic, with theater attendance down across the board. 2021 saw one at the end of the year with Spider-Man: No Way Home. This year has had three movies cross over the billion-dollar line – Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Jurassic World Dominion. 2023 has a large slate of big-budget franchise movies and some intriguing originals. It will be interesting to see if the annual number keeps with this upward trend.
Avatar: The Way of Water is in Theaters Now
