The Way of Water has crossed the billion-dollar mark at the global box office this week – and it still has time to swim.

The fact that I’m not a fan of the movie doesn’t negate that the sequel has been extremely popular and loved by audiences. The box office proves it. From Variety:

“James Cameron’s long-delayed sequel to ‘Avatar’ opened in mid-December with $134 million in North America and $435 million globally, and it’s remained a huge draw in the days since its release. So far, the Disney and 20th Century film has generated $317.1 million in North America and $712.7 million overseas, bringing its global tally to $1.025 billion. It’s surpassed ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ as the second highest-grossing movie of the year, and it’s the third highest of the pandemic era.”

It’s the fastest to reach $1 billion in 2022 (sixth fastest overall), with a trajectory similar to that of Spider-Man: No Way Home last year.

Before the movie’s release, it was reported that Avatar: The Way of Water would need to earn $2 billion at the box office to turn a profit. That means it needs to kick The Avengers: Infinity War out of its 5th top-grossing movie of all time spot. There’s not a public number out there for how big the budget is, but James Cameron told GQ it was “very fucking [expensive]” to create. Current projections put the film’s final tally around $1.6B – it’s not $2B, but it’s a lot of money. You certainly can’t call this movie a failure or a flop – even if you didn’t like it.

The Billion Dollar Movie Club

2019 had nine movies cross the line. Huge box office takes weren’t uncommon during Marvel’s first saga. It’s been a hard number to hit post-pandemic, with theater attendance down across the board. 2021 saw one at the end of the year with Spider-Man: No Way Home. This year has had three movies cross over the billion-dollar line – Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Jurassic World Dominion. 2023 has a large slate of big-budget franchise movies and some intriguing originals. It will be interesting to see if the annual number keeps with this upward trend.

Avatar: The Way of Water is in Theaters Now

James Cameron is back in the director’s chair. Original cast members include Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana as Neytiri. Also returning are Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver. New additions Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, and Vin Diesel join them.

Jake Sully and Ney’tiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.
