Wondering what the future holds in store for D&D? 2023 is going to be a big year. Here’s everything we know coming out so far.

Next year is the last full year of D&D 5th Edition. And while 5E might be coming to a close as D&D gets ready to celebrate its 50th anniversary, WotC has some big amazing books planned to set the stage for the next evolution of D&D.

One D&D promises to be backward compatible with all your 5th Edition adventures. And it’s anyone’s guess when in 2024 the new evolution of D&D will actually release. In the meantime, here’s every book we know coming to D&D in 2023.

Every Book We Know Coming to D&D in 2023

The year starts off with a rerelease of 2019’s Tyranny of Dragons with a brand new cover. The old version is out of print. The new version gives Tiamat a scary new look. If you missed out on this one, this will be your chance to play it again.

Then, on February 21st, Keys from the Golden Vault, kicks off the actual new releases. This time with an adventure anthology that features heists and hijinks. Keys from the Golden Vault features a heist at the center of every tale.

Then in Spring, things get giant. All those giant-themed classes and backgrounds and feats from before the days of One D&D have their place in this book. Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants, is a tome of all things giant-related. You can expect player-facing content as well as new monsters and items in this book.

Then in Summer (more like August 2023), everyone’s favorite starter adventure, the Lost Mines of Phandelver gets an upgrade in a big way. The Phandelver Campaign will give this early 5E adventure which was many players’ first adventure in 5th Edition the full campaign treatment. If you wondered what happens after you finish the Mines, this is your chance to find out.

Then in Fall, The Book of Many Things gives players a host of new options. This is a Tasha’s/Xanathar’s style player expansion book. You can expect new subclasses, new feats, and probably new spells. All are themed around the campaign-ending Deck of Many Things. Expect a lot of fate and cards. Gambit fans, this is your chance.

Finally, Planescape is back, making D&D in 2023 very exciting. This “campaign collection” will include everything you need to explore Sigil and the multiverse beyond. Planescape is something that many fans have been looking forward to for a long, long time. It is one of D&D’s most beloved settings, at least by a certain sect of D&D weirdos (I know, I’m one), but after Spelljammer failed to launch as enthusiastically as some fans were hoping for, the hype has been tempered.

Still, it’s a return to a much-beloved setting as D&D 5E transitions into the next evolution. A lot could go right!

What are you looking forward to next year?
