The Bad Batch and Omega are coming back for season two next month. Here’s what we know and what we noticed in yesterday’s trailer.

The first season of The Bad Batch was one of last year’s big animated Star Wars releases. It focused on Clone Force 99, or Kamino’s group of ‘imperfect’ clones, all perfectly suited for special operations and jobs. Beginning with the end of the Republic and the rise of the Empire, the first season of The Bad Batch gave us a look at the earliest days of Imperial rule. In the season finale, we learned that Omega was one of the clones and possibly the most genetically similar clone to Jango Fett since Boba.

And season two looks like it’s going to raise the stakes on everything from missions to payouts, to potential new friends, foes, and information.

New Creatures and Missions, Same Goofy Batch

The trailer opens on an idyllic beach planet, and it’s the sort of place that would be beautiful and positive if Star Wars hadn’t made sure that beach locations and vacation planets weren’t almost exclusively used for scenes designed to hurt us or the main characters. The batch seems to be on a mission, likely for Cid, which is going its normal amount of messed up but they get the necessary pickup at the last minute. The banter is goofy and fun and a perfect example of why we love Clone Force 99 so much. But unlike last season, Omega seems to be a full member of the team now.

Previously we saw the youngest clone safely left behind. But in season two she’ll have a helmet, a weapon, and seemingly be seen as a competent member of the team. We also later see her having a tough conversation about how much the batch has given up to keep her safe. It looks like season two will stop treating Omega like a little kid and give her the chance to grow into a young adult.

Good Soldiers Follow Orders?

One of the repeated themes throughout Clone Wars and The Bad Batch has been the question of do good soldiers follow orders? The quote is repeated time and time again and the question comes back as Order 66 comes to pass and as Crosshair attempts to kill Omega, a child. Most of the clones are literally programmed to follow certain orders, but in this trailer, we learn that some of them are beginning to question this.

Crosshair is quick to call them traitors, but the trailer brings us back to the Omega and Hunter’s lines about the decisions that have to be made and their ability to make their own choices. The nature of the Clones as characters makes this one of the most interesting questions their stories could focus on. And with characters all over this spectrum, it continues to be a theme of exploring.

New Characters and Cameos

The Bad Batch season two trailer was full of new characters as well as brief appearances from characters we already know. I’m pretty sure I saw a glimpse of Bail Organa, but more exciting was the Wookiee Jedi from The Clone Wars, Gungi. He’s still alive, around, and using the Force.

This season will also introduce Phee Genoa who’s played by Wanda Sykes and from the looks of it will be hiring the batch for at least one job. We also see another new character in Tawni Ames. We’re not sure who she is at all, but her outfit says, “bounty hunter” to me.

She has a line towards the end of the trailer, “Peace was never an option,” as the scene transitions over to the senate and Palpatine. And of course, peace was never an option with the rise of fascism throughout the galaxy. But this delivery reminded me of the first lines of the Sith Code, “Peace is a lie. There is only Passion.” Was this intentional?

The Bad Batch will primer on January 4th streaming on Disney+ with a two-episode opening day. The full list of episodes and release dates can be found here on StarWars.com.
