Warhammer 40K: Angron Is The World Eater’s Best Cover

Angron is going to be an “auto include” for me and my World Eaters army. He’s going provide be the best cover possible.

The World Eaters are in a lot of danger of being a onenote army. That note sounds like chain-axes spinning up and crashing down and then the subsequent screams of their victims. Maybe that’s more than one actual note and the metaphor is getting lost here…but the note is supposed to be melee. They are an army that needs to close the gap and tear into their opponent up close to have any chance at winning. That’s exactly why I’m bringing Angron in every list.

Angron The Auto-Include

Games Workshop showed off some stats for Angron in a preview and yeah…he’s terrifying. He’s a freaking Daemon Prince Primarch… so, yeah, he absolutely should be terrifying.

He’s going to murder anything he gets into close combat with as few things in the game have a chance at withstanding that much potential damage in a single round. And that’s the exact reason why he’s never going to make it to melee in the first place and probably die turn one. And I’m still going to take him. Every. Time.

The World Eaters are a melee focused army. That much is clear from their history in both the game and the lore. They don’t do the psychic phase and they don’t do shooting so much. Their battle plans usually involve running/charging full speed into the enemy and praying to Khorne they get to hit first. It’s not a masterfully crafted battleplan — it’s a roadmap to the slaughter house. That’s their biggest strength and their greatest weakness.

But here’s the thing: they are going to be scary in melee. The entire army is. They just have to get there in the first place. Unless you’re playing on a super terrain dense tabletop I don’t know how you’re expecting your models to make it across the tabletop. And the ones that do will probably have taken losses and will be understrength going into close combat vs opponents who probably haven’t been softened up with any sort of ranged attacks.

Maybe your plan is to use the Jakhals as cannon fodder to absorb those losses as the Berzerkers close in. Sure — that’s what screens are for. They provide cover for your units. And you know who’s going to be the ultimate screener for your entire army?

Yep. The Red Angel himself. Angron is the ultimate screen for the World Eaters. He’s a terror that cannot be ignored and therefore he’s going to get all the attention. Because if by some miracle of the dice he DOES get across the tabletop he’s going to single handedly destroy armies. But that’s why he’s never going to make it there.

I mean, think about it. 40k is a shooting dominated game. There are armies in the game that can literally wipe out the other army before the end of their shooting phase. Or at least cripple it to the point of irrelevance.  Ideally, you’ve got some terrain to give you some protection but that’s not guaranteed. So having something that can draw the enemy fire away to buy you time is your only consistent option. That’s what Angron will do every game. Because if they don’t kill him at range then he’s going to take out everything in close combat.

Angron is the best cover for your army to make it across the tabletop. If the enemy is focused on taking him out you’ve got a round or two to get across the tabletop and get into melee with the rest of your army. Can you make it? That’s the gamble of the World Eaters.
