Watch Tom Cruise Risk His Life for Our Entertainment in ‘Mission: Impossible 7’
Tom Cruise believes in Mission: Impossible 7 so much he got on a motorcycle and drove off a cliff. Six times.
The sixty-year-old actor is known for doing his own stunts. He’s done everything from car chases and hitting 7gs in a Boeing F/A 18F Super Hornet to doing over 100 HALO jumps. In every new movie, he pushes the limits of what the studio and insurance companies will allow him to do. Next on his list comes out the upcoming summer, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. The action franchise exists to make other action movie franchises look bad.
Pay attention to that closing shot. You’re about to see how they did it, and it’s legit terrifying.
Shooting That Jump
The journey starts with a drone shot of a cliffside in Hellesylt, Norway. There’s an incomplete ramp; the scaffolding leads right to the cliff’s edge. Tom Cruise will ride a motorcycle off the ramp to what would be uncertain death for most of us. But, for him… it’s a challenge. It’s fun. So fun he did it SIX TIMES to make sure the shot was perfect for Mission: Impossible 7. It was also the first scene they shot. For reasons.
Preparation for those six jumps took several years to accomplish. Not just so Cruise and the crew to learn how to do it safely but for tech to catch up with the way director Christopher McQuarrie wanted to shoot it. Like Top Gun: Maverick, this movie required the invention of new cameras.
“This is far and away the most dangerous thing we have ever attempted.”
My favorite part of this behind-the-scenes look is the crew’s astonished faces every time Cruise doesn’t die. It’s nail-biting, and then…
Mission: Impossible 7 Cast & Details
All we know is that the story picks up after Fallout, and it includes MI‘s signature spy games.
Christopher McQuarrie is writing/directing again, and the core cast that’s been a part of the franchise for nearly 30 years is back. That includes Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Ferguson. Esai Morales (who played Deathstroke in Titans) will be one of the crew’s antagonists. Plus Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Cary Elwes.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One arrives in theaters on July 14.
