The boop board game is a deceptively clever game that takes all the fun of herding cats into a quick-playing strategy game.

Imagine you were playing Tic-Tac-Toe and thought “What if the Xs and Os were kittens?” Firstly, that’s an absolutely wild thought to have. Secondly, I love it.

How To Play The boop Board Game

The boop board game is a 2 player competitive abstract strategy game. The goal of both players is to be the first to have 3 cats (not kittens) in a row. Each player has 8 kittens and 8 cats.

On their turn, a player places one of their kittens anywhere on the bed. The bed is a cloth placed on the box and is stitched with a 6×6 grid.

Anytime a kitten is placed next to another, that kitten boops its neighbors, pushing them one space away and potentially off the bed. However, pushes don’t cause chain reactions and kittens pushed into one another don’t move at all. This applies to all kittens, even your own. This can be a problem as you’re trying to get all your kittens in a row.

When a player has 3 kittens in a row, they are upgraded to cats. The 3 kittens in the row are removed from the game and 3 cat tokens are added to that player’s pool of available tokens. On that player’s turn, they can place a kitten or a cat. Cats work the same as kittens except kittens cannot boop cats.

boop Review

The boop board game is going to drive people away from its cutesy aesthetic. It’ll bring in even more because of that too, but that’s not my point. boop is surprisingly strategic. The board will appear highly chaotic at the start. Kittens will be booping all over the place so it seems impossible to get them in a row.

However, with careful planning and being able to anticipate your opponent’s moves, it’s possible to set up traps to get exactly what you want. So don’t be deterred by the adorable cover art. boop is a game you’ll be analyzing more than you might expect.

h hey! BoLS might make a little dolla-dolla if you decide to buy these items. We need that money so we can afford to adopt more real-life cats and kittens to boop.
