Paramount+ Orders 8 Episodes Of D&D TV Series, Wins Award For Best Timing
As the community is in uproar about Wizards of the Coast and their approach towards Open Gaming, Paramount+ Orders A D&D TV Series.
As Hasbro tightens its belt in the wake of stock price drops, Wizards of the Coast comes under fire for both downgrading the quality of Magic: the Gathering and the ongoing OGL 1.1 community uproar, and as Hasbro prepares eOne, the lead studio behind the D&D TV series, for sale to another company, we finally get some news about the D&D TV series.
Specifically that Paramount+ will order eight episodes of a live-action series. And while Hasbro is currently looking to sell eOne’s film and TV business, including the TV operation developing said show, it proceeds nonetheless. Here’s what we know.
A D&D TV Show – Now?
Deadline reported on the news yesterday as Paramount+ announced their order for the show:
Paramount+ has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order to an adaptation of Hasbro’s wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game franchise. Red Notice filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote the pilot script and is set to direct the first episode of the series which will be a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures.
According to Deadline, this was eOne’s major focus under the President of Global Television, Michael Lombardo. The live-action series was to be the studio’s largest-scope TV project ever, with the goal of launching a D&D universe, alongside the upcoming D&D movie.
That was before Hasbro announced their sale, including the Lombardo-headed TV operation which both developed and sold the live-action D&D TV series.
Now news on how that might shake out, especially in the wake of the sale. But it seems that at least eight episodes will be out there, exploring D&D not just as a roleplaying game, but as an entertainment brand.
It’s like they say, timing is everything
