‘Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’ Info Leaked Online
Rocksteady has been tight-lipped about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – only for the internet to leak some things.
Rocksteady finished the Arkham trilogy with Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015. The company was very secretive about its next project for a long time afterward. Many thought their next project was a Superman title thanks to references to Superman throughout Arkham Knight. The game included details like posters for Metropolis, villains mentioning Superman, and a voicemail from Lex Luthor.
Unfortunately for my Superman-loving heart, the next project announced was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in August 2020. The reveal trailer showed that the game was still going to take place in Metropolis, just when Brainiac invades the Earth and mind controls the Justice League. The story follows the Suicide Squad members Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark who are tasked with saving the Earth by stopping Brainiac and killing the Justice League before all is lost.
The announcement came as a surprise – there are references to the Suicide Squad in a Batman game. But they came from the Batman games not made by Rocksteady like Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate.
David Haddad, WB Games President, said of the announcement that –
“‘Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’ showcases Rocksteady Studios’ ability to combine masterful storytelling and compelling gameplay based on well-known DC characters…The team is creating a genre-defining experience that brings the formidable Suicide Squad to life in a way that has never been done before.”
Sefton Hill, Creative Director and Co-founder of Rocksteady Studios, also said –
“We’re introducing an original take on the Suicide Squad that combines the rich, character-driven storytelling Rocksteady is known for with innovative gameplay features to create a unique gaming experience.”
Since the announcement, we have gotten very little info on the game itself outside of a few more trailers with little gameplay on it. We slowly have been getting the bigger picture of what it is, but recently a leak gave us the best look at what it could be and maybe even more.
Rocksteady Sprung a Leak
The internet has been in an uproar over an image that was leaked on 4Chan and has been popping up on Twitter. The image shows off the menu from a test build that is turning a lot of people off. That’s because the game mentions a Battle Pass, multiple currencies, and a store. It also looks more like it’s multiplayer rather than a straightforward story.
The Arkham series was very much a story-driven game with an open-world emphasis. It included unlockable outfits with some DLC suits in the game. A Battle Pass would make the game more monetized, which frustrates audiences. That’s not surprising – Battle Passes outside of Fortnite haven’t been well received (like the ones in Overwatch 2.)
The leaked image was confirmed as legitimate by VGC after a source told them the Battle Pass would focus on cosmetic items like skins. The source also verified the various currencies shown at the top of the image are XP used to level up and customize the skill trees of each character.
Image removed at the request of WarnerMedia.
VGC was also told by the same source that –
“You don’t start off debuffed and weak…You just start off great and can get ridiculous, like ‘Arkham Knight’s Batman.”
The other aspect of the image making people mad is the game’s multiplayer focus. It seems to be a live-service game like Marvel’s Avengers. As one of the few people who actually really liked that game, this doesn’t bother me too much. The game looks like it could be fun from the gameplay we’ve seen so far. It all just comes down to whether or not the game gets a lot of content after release. That’s what hurt Square Enix’s Marvel game more than everything else. Marvel fans – ASSEMBLE!
Marvel’s Avengers had a solid story – that was the best thing about it. But Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League‘s story is still a bit of a mystery. Well, until another potential leak appeared online.
The (unconfirmed) leak came out around the same time as the menu image and is one specific set of images that claims to lay out the whole story (spoilers in the link, obviously!) The story seems plausible enough based on the current footage we’ve seen. But fake leaks have duped audiences before, so take it all with a grain of salt. Hopefully, Rocksteady is able to show off more of the game and maybe debunk those story spoilers.
Are you still excited about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League? Or did any of these leaks leave you less excited?
