‘Sword Art Online: The Movie’ Coming to US Theaters Very Soon
Get ready to log back in. Scherzo of Deep Night, the next installment in the massively popular Sword Art Online series, is almost here.
Crunchyroll announced that Sword Art Online The Movie – Progressive – Scherzo of Deep Night will be coming to theaters in the US a little more than a week on February 4th. This movie will be the sequel to 2021’s Sword Art Online the Movie- Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night.
Scherzo of Deep Night
Sword Art Online is based on a light novel series by Reki Kawahara. The light novel inspired an anime adaptation that started in 2012 and ran for four seasons, as well as a number of theatrical releases. The Progressive series of movies are a reboot of the original light novel series, written by Kawahara himself. It offers a deeper look at where the story all began.
The official synopsis describes Scherzo of Deep Night as:
“The world’s first VRMMORPG (Sword Art Online) became a game of death. Over a month has passed since 10,000 users were trapped inside the game world. Asuna, who cleared the first floor of the floating iron castle of Aincrad, joined up with Kirito and continued her journey to reach the top floor. With the support of female Information Broker Argo, clearing the floors seemed to be progressing smoothly, but…
Conflict erupts between two major guilds who should be working together – the top player groups ALS (the Aincrad Liberation Squad) and DKB (the Dragon Knights Brigade). And meanwhile, behind the scenes exists a mysterious figure pulling the strings….
In a dangerous battle of death, there is an assault that differs from the threat, and it will involve Asuna and Kirito…!”
Scherzo of Deep Night is directed by Ayako Kōno with a screenplay by Yukito Kizawa and story by Reki Kawahara. The film stars Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Japanese) and Bryce Papenbrook (English) as Kirito Haruka Tomatsu and Cherami Leigh as Asuna, and Inori Minase and Anairis Quiñones as Mito.

Sword Art Online takes place in a near-future world where protagonists Kirito and Asuna play through various virtual Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) worlds online, notably the world “Aincrad”. On November 6th, 10,000 players log into the game only to discover that they aren’t able to log back out. the players must defeat all 100 floors of Aincrad before they can be set free and any player who dies in the game will also die in real life.
Since the Light Novel’s publication in 2002, Sword Art Online has seen massive success and acclaim. As of 2022, the light novel has sold more than thirty million copies and inspired an anime series, multiple movies, video games, and live-action adaptations.
