TTRPG Creators Organize in Wake of WotC’s OGL Saga
As the RPG community looks for ways to heal, a number of third-party TTRPG creators are coming together to ensure they stay protected.
If anything, the last four weeks have proved the power of collective action in the TTRPG world. As thousands of fans, publishers, petitioners, and more worked together, giving Wizards of the Coast feedback both in the form of survey results and, perhaps more impactfully, D&D Beyond subscription cancellations, the results are clear.
When enough people speak, even a billion-dollar corporation will listen. This is why, in the wake of WotC’s total reversal of their OGL 1.0a plans, many TTRPG creators have decided to band together.
A TTRPG Creator’s Association Forms
In an Instagram post, prolific 5th Edition creator DM Dave announced that a new alliance was in the works. The post calls for moving forward, and healing, but promises that staying vigilant is a part of this. This is where we get a little info about a third-party TTRPG creators’ association:
“But rest assured, we are still vigilant. Noah Downs, other creators in the community, and myself are working to created a third-party TTRPG creators’ association to ensure that nothing like this happens again. And if it does, we’ll be ready and organized for it.”
And then underneath the post:
“What a huge victory for all of us! @my.lawyerfriend and other creators will work together to create a third-party creators’ association to ensure that we’re protected. Not just against moves made by WotC, but anything that threatens our community. Of course, none of this would be possible without the continued support of you, the fans.”
Noah Downs confirmed the statement on Twitter, adding that his firm is working together with DM Dave, The Griffon’s Saddlebag, and more to form an association dedicated to ensuring that every creator “can retain control of their story.”
As we’ve seen, collective action has an immense amount of power. Only through swift and concerted efforts did the community make its voice heard. Soon, creators will have another avenue through which to direct their collective action. That’s the hope, at least. We’ll follow the story, adding more details as it develops.
