U.S. Congressman Will Be Sworn Into Office on a ‘Superman’ #1
The Library of Congress will provide a premiere issue of Superman to lay underneath the Constitution when he’s sworn into office.
A little boy from an alien planet is forced to leave his home after his home is destroyed. He lands in an all-American small town in Kansas, and the couple that takes him quickly realizes that their adopted son has superhuman powers. Since his creation in 1938, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s big-muscled, big-hearted Man of Steel has become one of the most recognizable figures in pop culture. And now, he’s about to become a part of American history.
California Representative Robert Garcia Will Be Sworn in on a Superman #1
In the 2022 midterm elections, self-proclaimed comic book nerd Robert Garcia was elected as a U.S. Representative for California. Today, he tweeted a picture of the three items he’d have underneath the Constitution when he’s sworn into office. The items pictured were his citizenship certificate, a photo of his parents (who died due to COVID-19), and an original Superman #1 courtesy of the Library of Congress. While the issue isn’t a first edition (it’s a reprint), it’s still bookoo rare (and expensive).
Will be proudly sworn-in to Congress on the U.S. Constitution. Underneath the Constitution will be 3 items that mean a lot to me personally. A photo of my parents who I lost to covid, my citizenship certificate & an original Superman #1 from the @librarycongress. 🇺🇸😊 pic.twitter.com/YGW43OLsIp

In 2014, Rep. Garcia was the first Latino and first openly gay Mayor of Long Beach, CA. His position as representative started on January 3rd, but his Super-swearing-in will have to wait until the House can choose a new Speaker.
Rep. Garcia is an immigrant from Peru. He told BuzzFeed News that as a kid, he learned to read and write English with the help of comic books. From one “comic book nerd” to another, Superman is a perfect choice for the occasion. After all, the Kryptonian hero upholds truth, justice, and the American way – including his supportive attitude toward immigrants and refugees.
