Warhammer 40K: The Most Important Units of the Year
Take a look at the most important Warhammer 40K units of the last year.
2022 was a big year for Warhammer 40,000. We saw a bunch of new books come out, as well as new units and models. On top of all that as pandemic restrictions ended the tournament scene slowly came back to life. Throughout 2022, there have been several units that really got people talking. Maybe it was because of how they dominated the meta, or maybe it was just their potential. As is now my tradition each year, here are the units that had the biggest impact on the game this year.
Hearthkyn Warriors
These guys were the very first models for the new Leagues of Votann that GW showed off back towards the start of the year. And boy did they have everyone talking. This was proof at long last Squats were making their return to the game. Speculation was rife, and in truth the anticatiption and excitement far outweighed any later discussion about how good they were. However, it’s hard to argue that the Hearthkyn didn’t affect the player base a lot this year.
Angron
We already knew that World Eaters were getting a new Codex by the time Angron was formally announced by GW. Because of “potato-cam” leaks, Angron missed out on a grand reveal. However, the arrival of a Primarch to the tabletop is always a big deal. It’s been a few years now since we got a new one and the Red Angel made a lot of sense. For a unit that hasn’t even come out this year, he’s had a ton of people talking. We’ve gotten looks at his stats and they are pretty good, though maybe not as good as they are made out to be. Angron was also another how case of how bad GW leaks have been this year, with the first pictures coming from 3rd party sources.
Hekaton Land Fortress
The Hekaton Land Fortress was the big new centerpiece of a brand new 40K army. As such it was pretty much guaranteed to be talked about and make splash. However the model itself was pretty quickly overshadowed by its rules. The Hekaton became emblematic of just how broken the army was and how crazy its rules were. The option to load up on the new Beam weapons had people talking. However it was also part of a new combo that could potentially kill a significant amount of models in the game without rolling dice. It was FAQ’d pretty quickly, but it still caused a stir. It is also one of the most unique looking big vehicles in the game.
The Rogal Dorn
The second Primarch on the list, this one didn’t quite return to the tabletop. Rather, he got a new tank named after him. The Dorn was part of the new Astra Miliatrium Codex and a brand new unit for it. That should have been pretty cool. Certainly a lot of people talked about how good it might be. However at the end of the day the Dorn became kind of emblematic of how much GW seemingly mis-tuned the Guard book. A lot of people were really unhappy with the book and the fact that the Dorn shouldn’t really exist was representative of the underwhelmed feelings towards the codex in general.
Henry Cavill
Henry Cavill is an absolute unit! The announcement late in the year, that GW, Cavill and Amazon are teaming up to make new 40K content, shows and maybe movies, was the biggest news of the year. While we don’t know if it will change the game directly, for Warhammer itself, this is a game changer (do not pardon my pun, I’m proud of it). Cavill’s announcement really got everyone talking, and one of the biggest questions has been, “what character/unit will he play“.
