Warhammer: Black Library Submissions Open Now
Aspiring Black Library authors out there now’s your chance to submit your writing sample for review. Submissions are open!
Games Workshop announced late last year that the submissions process for Black Library would be opening in 2023. Well, that time is now! If you’ve got a Warhammer-themed story you think would be a perfect fit for Black Library now is your chance to get it in official print.
“Eventually, your proposed story will end up at between 5,000 and 10,000 words, but all that’s required at the moment is a gripping 500-word extract of your epic tale, accompanied by a 100-word synopsis. This synopsis should be as engaging as possible, while summarising any key plot points – don’t worry about squeezing in every last detail, as we’ll ask you to expand on it if your story is selected. “
That’s right potential authors — you just need to have an idea and 500 words ready to go. And you’ve actually got more time than you think to work on it. The submissions aren’t closing until the 11th of February. How do you send in your submissions? There’s a handy link for that:

“If the editors like what they read, they’ll be in touch – and you could become a published author!”
Important Caveats
Now there are few rule to cover. This year, GW is focusing on Space Marine successor Chapters, specifically. So your story needs to involve them. Here’s the other framework you need to be aware of:
Not sure which chapters are “legal” — don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Our sister site Lexicanum has a complete list without any homebrew. They even have source references just in case you were worried about how “legit” those Space Marine successor Chapters are.
This might feel a bit constrained but having some guidelines and learning to stay within the “sandbox” requirements can be super helpful to stay focused. And hey, you’ve got 500 words to “wow” the editor — having some extra focus is only going to help your work shine.
If you’re up to the task and have an idea I say go for it! Even if your idea doesn’t make the cut you’ve at least tried. And it’s a chance to get your story published as part of the official Warhammer canon!
Good luck to all you aspiring authors out there. Maybe we’ll be writing about your story in the future.
