The Bloodborne dark Pinocchio-inspired game gets closer to becoming a real boy–or getting a release date, same thing.

Lies of P is a Soulslike action RPG being developed by Neowiz Games and Round8 Studio. Announced back in May 2021, it caught many players off guard. After all, it was Bloodborne-inspired and a Pinocchio story. The developers explained that they wanted to build a story around something already famous to build a fanbase faster. They also choose Pinocchio to take cues from darker aspects of the original story that Disney made so family-friendly.

The main story has you wake up at an abandoned train station in Krat, a city overwhelmed by madness and bloodlust. In front of Pinocchio lies a single note that reads, “Find Mr. Geppetto. He’s here in the city.” Players will be using a “unique lie” system that will affect gameplay depending on their interactions with others to try and become human by the end. So to become a real boy, you are going to have to tell some fibs as well as kill enemies who are after you. There was no word on a release date or timeframe, but we finally got a better idea of its possible release date.

“I’ve Got No Strings To Hold Me Down.”

The Lies of P Twitter announced that the release window for the game is August 2023. The announcement also came with a brand-new trailer. The trailer has a very villainous monologue coming from what seems to be the main bad guy of the game in a tower pulsing with energy. Everything the man says is incredibly sinister, especially with the grotesque monsters shown during his speech.

The trailer shared on Twitter only mentioned the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. Still no mention of the Xbox and PC versions. Odds are they will release it around the same time since it’s already been announced. Unlike GigaBash or Cuphead which came out on specific consoles first before heading to others. The release window doesn’t have a specific date outside of August and there’s no guarantee it will be able to meet that date. Games get delayed all the time due to a number of reasons. Lies of P is one of my most anticipated games of the year and it is very exciting to be that much closer to a release.

The Return of Pinocchio

The character of Pinocchio has gotten a really interesting return. Disney recently released one of their many live-action remakes starring Tom Hanks. Guillermo Del Toro released his own stop-animated version that takes place in WW2 Italy. Disney of course went the family-friendly route, Del Toro embraces some of the darker ideas, and it seems Lies of P will be the darkest version of Pinocchio yet. The gameplay has Pinocchio wielding weapons that would give the puppet a much faster and bloodier way out of that whale.

The game is full of dark and twisted monsters, both organic and mechanical, coming to destroy Pinocchio. There are recognizable things in the game like Geppetto and a small cage on Pinocchio’s hip that carries, most likely, Jiminy Cricket. The cricket conscience helps players decide whether or not to lie to NPCs. I am incredibly excited to see more of what is to come with the game since I adored Bloodborne‘s setting and atmosphere. I also am fascinated by taking a well-known fairy tale and doing something just bonkers with it. If this game is even half as good as Bloodborne or even something like Once Upon a Time, we are in for a great twisted time like never before.

Lies of P will release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in August 2023.

Let us know if you are excited about this unique take on Pinocchio or if you are just excited to play a game like Bloodborne again.
