Star (Wars) Crossed Lovers: The Galaxy’s Best Romances
For Valentine’s Day, these star-crossed Star Wars characters have some of the best romances in the galaxy.
It’s Valentine’s Day. And sure, it’s by and large a Hallmark holiday made to sell more candies and cards. But it’s also just a nice day to celebrate love. And these Star Wars characters all know who they’re getting Valentines from.
Princess Leia & Han Solo
This one is a classic. The original love story in Star Wars was between a princess and a scoundrel. They’re an against-all-odds couple that managed to fall in love in the middle of a war and stay in love even when they were separated for long periods of time. In fact, the least believable part of their love story is that they ever broke up.
Doctor Aphra & Magna Tolvan
Coming from the comics are former Darth Vader employee, Doctor Aphra, and Imperial Officer, Magna Tolvan. Their relationship starts off pretty complicated, and I don’t think it would be unfair to call this an enemies-to-lovers story. But they’re also both fundamental in the other learning how to care about other people and wanting better things for themselves and the galaxy. Plus, Aphra and Tolvan are some of the only meaningful LGBT representations in Star Wars.
Thane Kyrell & Ciena Ree
If you’ve been skipping the comics you may have missed Aphra and Tolvan, and if you’ve been skipping the books you may have missed out on Thane and Ciena. These childhood friends both go for pilot training and end up on opposite sides of the war. But it doesn’t stop them from staying friends or falling in love. Their book, Lost Stars, was also adapted into a manga, which was pretty cute if you like the style.
Hera Syndulla & Kanan Jarrus
Hera Syndulla is the group leader and captain while Kanan is a survivor of Order 66 who’s just doing his best. They meet on a job on Gorse and are basically inseparable since. Or, more likely Kanan refuses to leave Hera’s side ever since. These two are the heart and soul of Rebels and easily become the crew’s stand-in mom-and-dad figures. But they also go from partners to friends before ever falling in love. It makes their love story feel real, grounded, and a little less juvenile than some other romances. Watching, you know they’re the real deal.
Obi-Wan Kenobi & Duchess Satine
The Clone Wars featured quite a bit of Anakin Skywalker and Padme sneaking around, and that was fine. But what it also had was Kenobi and Duchess Satine Kryze of Mandalore as they carefully balanced their duties against their obvious affection for each other. Their story is a series of “what ifs” as it’s more than implied that they could have had a chance at happily-ever-after if Obi-Wan Kenobi was willing to leave the Jedi Order. This one is also one of the greatest tragedies of the series, and I think we can all agree that both of these characters deserved better.
