In ‘The Lake’ a Small Town Learns Not to Steal from Kaiju – the Hard Way
Creature-feature The Lake teaches an important lesson: don’t steal from giant monsters. They’ll kill you and destroy your town.
The monster movie has been making a bit of a comeback recently. TOHO has a new Godzilla movie on the way, there’s a Gamera animated series in the works, and movies like Nope and Netflix’s Troll have gotten audiences’ attention.
This creature feature from Thailand takes inspiration from the effects of real-world environmental disasters. A child finds a strange egg and brings it back to her village – not realizing it belongs to a vicious monster that will kill everyone in town to exact revenge and retrieve what has been taken from it.
The monster in The Lake comes from artist Jordu Schell. You’ve seen his work in Cloverfield, The Thing, Starship Troopers, The Mist, The Cabin in the Woods, and Predators, among others. It’s a mix of practical life-size animatronics with CGI to take care of what the practical effects couldn’t. Director Lee Thongkham had this to say about the choice to go with a giant monster animatronic…
“This movie will bring back the nostalgia of when we first loved the original monster movies with animatronics and puppets. But the most exciting thing about the movie is watching this monster movie with 40% CGI. You will feel the real and spectacular scope and scale from Thai cinema.”
The Lake Trailer
This movie doesn’t have a big Hollywood budget behind it – despite that it looks fantastic. The creature design is an interesting and terrifying mix of elements. I would not want to face this thing. Check out the trailer below.
“A gigantic and bloodthirsty monster emerges from a lake after its egg is stolen and unleashes its fury on a town’s inhabitants, leaving a trail of destruction and death in its wake. The town of Bueng Kan, now cut off from the outside world, must mobilize its officials and citizens. They must catch this predator before it’s too late.”
The Lake is available on digital and blu-ray now.
