D&D: Honor Among Thieves arrives in theaters next week – will it roll a nat 20? The critics seem to think so.

The movie’s plot is right out of an adventure book. The Red Wizards of Thay, the nefarious magical ruling class of the country, is made up of demonologists that experiment with the arcane. They already hold a lot of power. Thanks to Edgin the Bard (Chris Pine), they’ve gotten their hands on the (what looks like) Draakhorn and gained even more. With it, they have the power to turn Thay into a nation of undeath.

Our party finds themselves traversing the lands of the Forgotten Realms, battling monsters, and putting themselves in mortal danger in order to reclaim the Draakhorn and defeat the Wizards and save Thay. And, like with any great adventure, there are dad jokes.

This movie looks like a LARP with a Hollywood budget–and without the scheduling conflicts. It’s serious about its monsters (ok, kind of) and adventure (very much so), but not so much when it comes to the party itself. The ridiculous situations you get during game nights are weaved in. We’ve had a couple of serious on-screen adaptations already, and they suck. I’m all for a movie that carries the fun of playing D&D with friends in its story. Not everything has to be dark, gritty, and dour.

It seems the critics agree. Since D&D: Honor Among Thieves’ debut at SXSW, the movie has gotten rave reviews. It’s being described as a fun action and adventure movie that’s not perfect but still worth the ticket price. Paramount wants to be sure you know that with this final trailer.

D&D: Honor Among Thieves Details

The cast includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are directing. The movie has a runtime of two hours and seventeen minutes.

A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic. Things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure.
