‘Evil Dead Rise’ Trailer Stars One Tough (Possessed) Mother
The deadites return to the big screen next month in the gore-soaked Evil Dead Rise. This is one bloody family reunion.
Evil Dead Rise moves the deadites and carnage to the big city. The movie uses the established lore as a jumping-off point and goes somewhere new. It takes place in a run-down apartment building in Los Angeles. The horror begins with an evil book, a record, and some familiar words. A woman and her nieces and nephews are forced to fight off demonic forces they’ve accidentally called up – starting with the kids’ mom.
This new trailer focuses on her gruesome transformation from a loving single mom to a demon from hell.
It certainly looks like an Evil Dead movie, though it’s more in line with the 2013 remake than the Bruce Campbell-led grooviness. The franchise’s leading man has already given his sequel his seal of approval. And Sam Raimi hand-picked the movie’s director, Lee Cronin, back in 2020.
Evil Dead Rise was announced back in 2020 and wrapped production in 2021. Production had to deal with pandemic shutdowns. It was initially an HBO Max exclusive, making it the first of the Evil Dead movies to go straight to streaming. Warner Bros. has been canceling projects left and right and pushing tent pole movies back by months, so the fact that it’s been elevated to a theatrical release is kind of amazing. It says a lot about the studio’s confidence and how highly the previews were rated.
Evil Dead Rise Cast and Details
The movie stars Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings), Lily Sullivan (Barkskins), Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, and Nell Fisher. Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) is directing. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are executive producers.
A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A. apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.
Thankfully, someone at Warner Bros. believes in the power of horror movies. Evil Dead Rise survived the cancellations and elevated from HBOMax Original to theatrical release this fall.
Evil Dead Rise hits theaters on April 21.
