Obsidian Entertainment’s space RPG Outer Worlds is getting an out-of-this-world update. Sorry–I couldn’t help myself.

Obsidian Entertainment was responsible for the fan-favorite Fallout: New Vegas, one of the biggest fan highlights of the Fallout series. After Fallout 4 disappointed fans of the RPG, many had an RPG itch they needed to be scratched. Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, the creators of the Fallout series, got to work on creating a brand-new IP in 2016. They took inspiration from other properties like Firefly, Futurama, True Grit, and Fallout.

The Outer Worlds was announced to the general public at the 2018 Game Awards. The game was to be a space RPG with writing by Leonard Boyarsky. And it’s looking like a wackier time than Fallout.

“Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the edge of the galaxy, you awake decades after your planned date only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the colony. Explore the various planets and locations of Halcyon, including the mysterious Gorgon Asteroid and the delightful distillery on Eridanos. As you encounter various factions, all vying for power, the decisions you make determine how the narrative unfolds.”

The game was eventually released on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and later Nintendo Switch. The game received great reviews that praised its writing, performances, and soundtrack. It got some criticisms that honestly are pretty normal for this genre. There were some bugs and awkward body movements–but honestly, that’s part of its charm. Eventually, 2 DLC packs came along and a sequel was announced.

If you’ve been on the fence about playing the game, now might be the time to dive in.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Edition

Obsidian Entertainment announced that a complete and updated version of the game will be coming out next month. The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Edition will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on March 7th for $59.99. It will have both DLC expansion packs Murder on Eridanos and Peril on Gorgon included with the updated version. Anyone who owns the current version for PS4, Xbox One, and PC can upgrade their copies for $9.99. It’s a great deal if you haven’t bought the DLC yet or can find a used copy to upgrade on the cheap.

The new version won’t just be a complete edition. It’ll also take advantage of the tech in current consoles like the Dual Sense trigger feedback for PS5. The visuals will be updated to 4K, 60 FPS, enhanced lighting, improved particle systems, and more assets throughout.

The game will also feature a new dynamic weather system, an increased level cap to 99 and upgrades to the AI for both companions and enemies while also updating their character models to reflect the new graphic changes.
